Just had a little time to check out this forum about horses on coins! Just wanted to say, great posts, even better coin photos! You guys/gals have some beautifull examples!!!!! Thanks for sharing your treasures..... So, I want to return the favour, here are two of my "horsie coins" One is a true ancient/AV Stater from Carthage circa 330BC/ Second is a "Medieval" coins from Flanders AV Cavalier d'or ND Count Louis De Male 1346-84 minted in Ghent/ shows Count riding his horse into battle!
Wow! So, how would you like to adopt a 31 year old Cuban from Miami? As usual, you are the king of gold. That first coin
Superb coins! About 2 years ago I also have had a "franc a'cheval" original from king Iohannes the Kind. For me it was a remarkable coin - Iohann is an equalence to Ivan I have to gift this coin to my best friend birthday.
Thanks! Alegandron/ personally I like the AV Flanders coin better, but it is so hard to decide, esp. when you collect all periods in history. I am now really liking my newest endeavor AR Roman coinage(Republican/Imperial/Provincials) Sallent/ Beautifull place, I have a lot of butterflies from Cuba! IVAN/ i also have this AV Cheval d"or from Jean Le Bon, I love medieval coins!!!!
John: Maybe if I help you cut grass, you could pay me with that Carthage AV Stater... (I don't collect ancient AV, but I do have and collect a lot of modern AV)...
Here's another Roman republican "horse" hiding in my coin album standing on a section of architecture called an aqueduct, commemorating the building of the Aqua Marcia, began by the praetor Q. Marcius Rex in 144 BC and finished in 140 BC. The head on the obverse is the fourth king of Rome, Ancus Marcus. Crawford 425/1. L.Marcus Philipus, AR Denarius, 56 BC, Rome. 3.7gm.
Since this thread has stretched the definition of 'ancient' already, I'll add a couple modern horses of Peter I of Russia (AR kopeck) and Charles I of England (AR half crown).
