Beautifull coin! Also known as the "Spider King" known for dispatching of political enemies into "oubliettes"
First year of issue, type 3, No Motto. If they didn't have mottos because ST. Gaudens didn't like the aesthetics of it - I have to agree.
Does this count? It's the strike before the Gold strike. If not, here is my interesting gold coin. SEGS is very strict on grading and correct variety. The 1885 was a Proof 65 in the early 70's now it only got a Proof 64. The $2.50, 1838-C/C is correctly graded and variety.
Awesome progress John . . . keep those improvements coming. I like to believe those violet peripheries exist in every date, and that you can attain such a worthy goal. It's easy to appreciate a set of coins where all are uniform in appearance . . . to assemble a set where every piece is just as appealing as every other would be an accomplishment beyond any reasonable expectation.
Regarding early Indian Head Eagles, I had asked if anyone knew why the 1907 and some 08's had no motto. I checked with a couple of my books (what a thing to do!) and between two of them it seems the story is: Saint-Gaudens in did not like the additional text in the design, but Teddy Roosevelt disliked the practice of referring to the deity on money. So they minted them without the motto. Public outcry ensued - a vocal minority I expect - so Congress under some pressure from constituents passed a law that it had to be there, which wasn't the case previously. So there you/I have it!
