That's an interesting thought. However PCGS and NGC are not monopolies. The correct term is a cartel. Which is perfectly fine. Coca cola and pepsico are a cartel but I don't think neither brands of soda have decreased in quality over the years.

Really what it is then is a duopoly and a cartel. So you're right. A real monopoly is The Federal Reserve through collusion with government.

I've had decent luck buying coins in anacs slabs and cracking them out and resubmitting to pcgs or NGC but then I've been around coins a little while and buy the coin not the slab often they come back the exact same grade. Biggest problem other then resale with anacs is their slabs are so friggen ugly!! As to any other 2nd tier tpg I've never bought a coin in their slabs

Selling junk slabs will get you nowhere in this hobby.
Say what you wish but history should tell you this.
Edit to add. Not directed at you Mainbill.

Almost all my coins are in pcgs NGC or raw and I'm gradually getting all the raw worthy of grading slabbed there's 14 at pcgs now I buy a lot of coins direct from estate sales auctions etc and privately where they've never been in the coin market why I get so many raw

I think ANACS has a cool looking slab. Each to his/her own.

I have about 130 SEGS slabs in my collection but many are for sale. Most of my slabbed coins are in their holders.

I'd say 2/3 pcgs 1/3 NGC and maybe 6 anacs I just busted out a couple anacs and shipped to pcgs

I have many coins in the old white ANACS slabs and won't touch them. Those in newer blue/yellow label slabs may be going to NGC soon.

Funny you mention that because I've found that a small percentage of coins graded Proof-70 aren't that in ANACS and ICG holders. For instance I had an ICG 1964 Proof-70 Roosevelt Dime that just wasn't. I have a Proof-70 1982 Washington Half Dollar that too is not the grade assigned, it looks more like a Proof 66 or 67 at best. Overall though most of my coins in ANACS, ICG, SEGS and NTC holders are accurately graded ones. The only time I would crack out a coin is if it came back as a details grade when I believe it should not have. SEGS detail and undergraded one of my Flying Eagle Cents I recently sold and think they are wrong plus too harsh in this evaluation. Do you think a coin like this merits a Details grade? fec.jpg fec2.jpg fec1.jpg fec3.jpg

Yes, that deserves a detail slab

I know the new owner, and he is doing his best.

    I wish him luck.

I did send some coins to the old NTC, and they came back properly graded, but perhaps that was because I wasn't an owner. :)

Yup I'd grade that details too it has corrosion/ environment damage not too severe but enough for the details grade

I've now got 2 old white slabs one coin I'm gonna crack out as it's just too important of coin not to. The other a nice xf large cent is just fine the blue and yellow I've been slowly cracking out every shipment to pcgs I send a couple. They nearly always come back the same.

The FE posted above would get a Details grade from NGC or PCGS.

The porosity on the obverse will detail it at any tpg .

Yes, details. Also, they spelled light as lite. That would drive me crazy.

I've always wondered about why they spell "light" as "lite", perhaps they've got beer on their minds??? Hmm......

No sugar or additives, just corrosion.
