People knew this, and the copper cents were beginning to disappear, as were the nickels. So if they did not ban the melting of them they would continue to disappear - only at a faster rate. And if they did, it would cost the govt. a fortune to replace the coins being melted.</p><p><br /></p><p>So hoarding these coins on the hope that the ban on melting is going to be lifted someday is a pipe dream !
