Should it be graded, or left alone?

I was, badly, in recounting that conversation, trying to show that many people are blinded to reality when it comes to having coins graded. So now I have a consensus on a potential grade I can show him that an average date, cc not withstanding, average MS condition is not worth more than it is in it,s current packaging. That it is a consensus not just my opinion, because our discussion became quite intense.
He, like others, seems to have the idea that unless slabbed most coins are are not going to sell or be viewed with suspicion. Like a lot of European collectors who don't come into contact with much US coinage, seeing MORGAN, CC, 1800's etc, the rose tinted specs come on and they are unable to then determine what is truly worth grading.
