No , i haven't but it looks Excellent !! I have a couple Half cents that are question marks . That book sounds like it would be good for ID'ing coins like this . If you have any coins in question, post away / maybe can help . Other than that, there isn't much out there for the ratings of this book . Good luck

I'm straight on the 4 or 5 examples i have. I just want to go deeper. Maybe put a sweet 10 or 15 pc collection together. I'm looking at Simians and some other expensive examples. I just can't pull the trigger until i know more.... or know what to seek.

Obviously very popular among collectors of these types. It is on it's second print run and is currently out of stock at Amazon

A deep subject largely uncovered by most books. It is a good book as far as it goes, but there is more to learn on the subject. As I understand it a second book with even more families of coins described is in the works.

This book introduces the "Families" of half pennies as grouped by common die or punch sharing. By recognizing these shared attributes, they group the coins into families and provide approaches to attribution which helps the reader know if their coin is a match to this family. The first edition does cover what I understand are the most common families, and as such it covers a lot of the coins out there.

As I said... they will need several editions to be exhaustive of every possible family there is.

I think right now my only interest is in those that relate to American Colonial type and variety collecting. So not sure how the book digs into that or does it just glaze over that?

Any idea when the next volume is coming out?

As I'm sure you're aware, the book is a publication of C4. There is a description on their website but I don't think it directly answers your question. I'm not familiar with this book but I'm pretty sure that any good book on this topic will bear on your question to some degree but probably indirectly. That is because the book is probably not designed around the issue of collecting per se but rather the scholarship surrounding the topic. So, you'll probably have to ferret out what information is pertinent to your area of interest since the book will probably not specifically high-light it.

I am a firm believer that if you want to know about a field as varied and fraught with uncertainty as early colonials and early contemporary counterfeits, then you will have to assemble a number of different reference works. This despite the publication of many new and excellent references in the last 15 or so years.

My advice is to always buy more books rather than less, even if your dive into the field will be more that of a diletante than a specialist.

As a final thought, since you are a member of C4, why not direct your question to the author(s) via email to one of the club officers?

Still waiting on some kind of word from them. I did get a message from a "leo" stating he would try to get a response for me. That was about 4 days ago.

No i didn't know C4 was in on the book. I have only found it on ebay for 50 bux with a pic of the cover.... and the name of the authors. The seller doesn't give any other breakdown on the book.

I do not delve into this type of collectables. I have a treasure trove of coin and currency reference books. Books are good! Thanks for the tip, good luck.

I just went ahead and bought the book. Supposed to be here by the 15th. I just wanted to make sure nobody said it was junk.

I'll let everybody know what i think about it.
    Thanks everybody's input.

Excellent book for this subject. Good research and very easy to use. I have a small collection but am always on the lookout especially in junk boxes. I even ripped one from a dealers ancient junk box at the end of an ANA National Money Show. Very happy to have it.

That is at the moment the only reference I know of on the contemporary counterfeit half pennys. (There is one on the Machins Mills coins, but this on is a beginning attempt to cover all of them.) I picked it up back when it first came out in 2018 when it was introduced at the Colonial happening at the EAC convention. It is a good book, but I am still having problems at times trying to determine the families. If you like the contemporary counterfeits, this book is a must have.
