Should I buy slabs just for referance?

Yes. At first I didn't understand why GDJSMP was recomending that I use coins in MS-63 or better. But after thinking about it, I realize that low MS coins are just too close to the AU level, and that sometimes AU coins can have better eye appeal than those low MS's. Thanks again for all the advice. I'm always learning here on CT.

I agree with most of what was covered in this thread, and I do this also for other types of coins. Well maybe not all the various grades like that have been mention here. I also find it helpful to review all the coins on a recurring basis - looking at the raw and the graded. I think you may change the grades on the raw coins until you get it down(at least I have). It seems there is such a fine line between VF/XF and AU/MS. Then again when in doubt post it here - of course I probably won't grade them, but I like seeing coins others collect. I spend more time looking than buying. Of course I can find eye appeal in some coins in G and VG. :)

AU is quickly becomming my favorite grade since I value eye-appeal at bargain prices more than a high technical grade. But I agree that it will be difficult to learn anything from a group of low-MS coins and that higher MS coins should be used.
