In cents dated before 1982 they are pure copper as compared to after wards which are zinc with a very thin layer of copper coating. Easy to see the differences as zinc is a poor metal and it rots fast.</p><p><br /></p><p>Since copper is so reactive it doesn&#039;t take much to tone them.
