Shifted "1" on 1899 $1 Silver (Black Eagle)

    How did this happen? The seal on the right and serial numbers are in the expected position.

    Was this a design change?

    There's actually two differences; for your variety, "Payable to the" and the serial number end at the same point; on the other variety, "the normal," "Payable to the" is more or less centered under the serial number. On rare occasions, I've seen these advertised, but do not remember the premium over a normal note.

    I think earlier notes have the 1 further to the left - I know my Lyons Roberts and Lyons Treat notes do.

    In the condition posted about $75 to $100, aside from star notes and some rare varieties. As you go higher in grade (condition) they get pricier. Uncirculated examples sell for $300+.
