"There are 5 varieties plus a transitional sub-category, of the reverses of the 1868 Shield nickels are distinguished by a certain number of broken letters. To ID "The Reverse of 1868 varieties, simply look at the star at 12:00. If the Star points to the "E" of States, it is the MORE common "reverse of 1867".
