I'm not positive there is a defining line Steve as I see coins move from one category to another depending on seller and, especially, who minted the coin and who might be on it. For instance, the Tetradrachm of Antony and Octavia I posted above can be found in either the Provincial listings of sellers or Republic or Imperatorial. I think I see them more often in the the Republic/Imperatorial because Marc Antony's portrait is on it, but I would consider this coin a Provincial issue. I consider a Roman coin to be Provincial first and foremost when it is struck to a local currency standard, such as my Tetradrachm. While it does mix some local imagery on the reverse, all of the legends are in Latin using strictly Roman terms with the picture of a Triumvir on the obverse with his wife which makes it very Roman in design. Still, it's in a foreign monetary standard which would only be produced in the Provinces, and thus, is Provincial in my mind. I'm always learning and could be off on it, but that is my defining line.
What incredible posts!!! I can't help but agree with JA about the 'appeal' of Provincials. What the heck...Another I'm quite fond of---- a bronze 'Assarion' of Elagabalus, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Moesia Inferior (Bulgaria) Serapis and his Kalathos or basket:
Thanks, and yes he was the actor who played Jed Clampett in The Beverly Hillbillies. The hyperlink I put on under that coin's photo will take you to my original post about the coin, including some details about Buddy Ebsen.
There is many I have that I like but I just love the bulls head on it. Julia Mamaea (222 - 235 A.D.) Æ20 Thrace, Deultum O: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG, diademed and draped bust right. R: CFPD, forepart of bull left. 20mm 3.5g Varbanov (E) 2380; Jurakova 202var.
Thanks for the coin-classification-clarification, ancientone & Carthago (I appreciate your comments) cheers, fellas
i'm with JA, if i had to collect only one type of coin, i would pick roman provincials...so many cool styles and varieties. but thank god i don't have to collect just one type. the last 6 roman coins i've picked up have been provincials...
Did you guy know that Commodus invented sun-glasses? Moesia, Markianopolis. Commodus AE20. Nemean Lion. Obv: AVT KAI L AVP KOMODOC, laureate head right wearing sun-glasses. Rev: MAPKIANOPOLEITWN, Hercules wrestling Namean lion left.
Hey Steve, how would you like an AR coin with Daenerys Targaryen obv., semi-nude of course, and a dragon rev? Only 15 more days until GOT!
The bust/SC/wreath types of the provincial mint of Antioch may seem dull sometimes, but the celators of Antioch could carve out emperors' portraits every bit as lifelike and artistic as their imperial counterparts. Also, one finds attractive "desert patinas" on many Antioch coins (just be sure they're original, and not painted on). Here, the celator's art and the sands of time have combined to create a commanding portrayal of Nerva...
Mind as well show my favorite AR Provincial... Tiberius (14 - 34 A.D.) AR Tetradrachm EGYPT, Alexandria O: [TI]BERIOS KAISAR SEBASTOS, laureate head of Tiberius right; LID (date) in right field. R: QEOS SEBASTOS, radiate head of Augustus left. EGYPT, Alexandria Mint, year 14=27/28 A.D. 13.43g 23mm RPC I 5090; Milne 54; Emmett 61
Mat's coin reminded me that many Judaean prutoh are Roman Provincials as well. The legend on this coin is TIBPIOY KAICAPOC, or Tiberius Caesar, and LIZ makes it regnal year 17, or AD 30, meaning it was struck in Jerusalem during the prefecture of Pontius Pilate... Judaean prutoh were as a rule so poorly crafted, that this coin, showing much of the obverse inscription, a full lituus, a full date, and almost all of the wreath - is a bit of a condition rarity (believe it or not)!
Killer coins all! Nero & Tiberius Billon Tetradrachm of Alexandria. Year 13 Egypt, Alexandria. Nero. Year 13 (66/67 AD). Billon Tetradrachm (12.92 gm, 24mm). Okay, I'll give 'er another go ... oh, but please give me a heads-up if I accidentally choose the wrong type, okay? (thanks) => how 'bout these "10" ..... are they all Provincials? ... is the Commodus Club allowed to play? => I'm just gonna keep-on posting 'em until I learn my stuff!!
Jovian, Julian-II, Licinius, Maxentius ... are those legitimate? Oh, I'm betting that the Julia Domna might be a rule-breaker?
