I've been wanting a coin with an incuse stamp. I think the archaic look is pretty cool and I like the bull on this one as well. One of my two wins at CNG this week. Please share your similar incuse stamps. BITHYNIA, Kalchedon. Circa 367/6-340 BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 3.76 g). Bull standing left on grain ear; kerykeion and monogram to left / Quadripartite incuse square with stippled quarters. Türkoğlu S02a; HGC 7, 511. VF, light toning. From the Kallman Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 195 (10 September 2008), lot 64.
That's a really cool incuse square. Here's my bull surfing on a grain ear, with a stippled mill-sail pattern incuse. BITHYNIA, Kalchedon AR Siglos (Persic standard). 5.31g, 17mm, BITHYNIA, Kalchedon, circa 340-320 BC. SNG BM Black Sea 112; SNG Copenhagen 348. O: KAΛX, Bull standing left on grain ear. R: Four-part incuse of mill-sail pattern.
I think the incuse square got a bit more fancy as time went on having the tiny dots, where as my 500 BC Thasos AR Drachm, only had plain incuse.
Turtle stater. Incuse square with a skew pattern. ATTICA, Aegina AR Stater. 12.12g, 21.1mm, ATTICA, Aegina, circa 480-456 BC, SNG Cop 507. O: Sea turtle; [T shaped pattern of pellets on back]; Countermarks: Corinthian helmet and others. R: Large square incuse with skew pattern. Another one of my favorite incuse reverses. PAPHLAGONIA, Sinope AR Drachm. 6.02g, 15.5x11.9mm. PAPHLAGONIA, Sinope, circa 480-450 BC. Sear Greek 3688; SNG Stancomb 750. O: Crude head of eagle left [with indication of beak and leg; dolphin left below]. R: Quadripartite incuse square with two opposing quarters filled and two stippled, one with raised pellet.

Sweet!! ... H8, congrats on scoring your first incuse-coin (yah, they are my absolute favourite coin-types!) Firstly, I'll post a couple of cool examples that are similar to your new OP-winner Oh, except I guess my two examples have the windmill rather than the square, eh? (oh well => they're both still gnarly bulls surfing!)
Ummm, and here are a bunch more of my cool incuse examples ... Lydia AR Siglos Ionia Erythrai Islands Off Thrace Thasos Ionia, Teos Gryphon Thessaly, Thessalian League Thasos, AR Stater Caria, Idyma Troas, Kebren Macedon, Eion Yah, I can't seem to get enough of this amazing coin-type (they're so cool) H8 => again, congrats on adding your sweet OP-winner (it's a great coin)
It's on the border of qualifying, but here is my Cherronessos Lion. It doesn't have an incuse punch, but it does have a quadripartite.
Nice coins, everyone! The archaic era is so enigmatic and interesting (although the simple quadripartite punch reverse wasn't restricted to the archaic period). Here are some with quadripartite or mill-sail incuse reverses: Cowabunga, surf's up! Grab your dolphin and hang ten . The first time I saw this type of coin I knew I would have to have one. This one's dolphin isn't the greatest but the heifer looks quite majestic on her living surfboard THRACE, Byzantion 340-320 BCE AR siglos, 17 mm, 5.0 gm Obv: Heifer standing left on dolphin swimming to left Rev: Incuse mill-sail pattern Ref: SNG BM Black Sea 21 One of over a dozen Pigasi in my collection, with another on the way (almost completed my Klazomenai Pigasus denomination set ) IONIA, Klazomenai 499-494 BC AR diobol, 10 mm, 1.0 gm Obv: forepart of winged boar right Rev: quadripartite incuse square, K Ref: SNG München 451 from the TIF Pink Floyd Animals collection; track 1, "Pigs on the Wing, Part I" Aegina obol, sadly off center ISLANDS off ATTICA, Aegina 475-470 BCE AR obol; 0.97 gm Obv: sea turtle with single row of dots on back Rev: windmill-shaped incuse punch Ref: SNG Delepierre 1511; SNG Cop. 505 If you're wanting other non-quadripartite incuse reverses, boy oh boy, I can load up this thread
=> I just went back and added my coin's names (sorry, I should have done that when I posted them) H8 => when you mentioned Abdera, did you mean the gryphon? (Ionia, Teos)
Yep, I just guessed rather than doing actual research. Both sides are great. I like the letters between the incuse design.
Wow, there are some amazing coins on this thread, eh? TIF => yah, your surfing bull is a winner! JBG => I love your turtle/tortoise with the dolphin incuse (sweet)!
These early, archaic coins are really cool. There are a few of them that are moving higher up my list. Here is the only one I have so far. It isn't really a quadripartite, more of an irregular punch :
