My letter to SGS They already hate me so I may as well feed the flames. Here's my letter to SGS. "I'm a bit puzzled by this. Could you please clarify? "News: On April 10, 2007, Star Grading Services was requested to submit a proposal for exclusive grading services for the American Numismatic Association. While we do not currently have the resources to do this, we viewed the request as a wonderful recognition of our growing popularity and market acceptance. An Independent Study has recently found that SGS currently accounts for 7% of all Graded Coins sold on the internet auction site eBay." I'm puzzled about this because how exactly does this suggest the ANA recognizes SGS as a legitimate slabber? Did anyone else get this offer? Couple this with the fact that on September 17, 2007 Ebay considers coins in an SGS holder to be raw/uncertified and it gets a bit confusing. In essence under the new ebay rules one is NOT allowed to put an SGS MS68 Morgan dollar (for example) in the title of the auction. Furthermore, the text of the auction can NOT include price references. Bottom line is that a coin in an SGS holder can NOT claim to be accurately graded. It can only be an opinion and can NOT be compared to the five services that ebay has chosen. I have collected coins for most of my life and I'm not that young. I feel the ANA knows a lot more than ebay so I suspect the ANA offer you tout is a bit misleading. If ebay can come to such a conclusion I highly doubt the ANA could not come up with same. Perhaps the ANA made this offer as a mere formality well knowing it would never come to fruition. Gotta love coins and politics!" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
