Earlier in this thread I jumped on PCGS for grading two satin nickels as MS66SF that seemed to me to be poorer quality than that. I paid low, but in the ball park of market price, for those coins so I was not pleased. I couldn't really say anything to the seller because the coins were graded as he advertised.

(Thanks to GDJMSP for reminding me that PCGS has a real guarantee. At some point I will probably send those two coins to them for replacement/compensation.)

To be fair, I have gotten a couple of MS70  coins from Abon that were horrible. Coins that have come up in loose change were in better shape than those. The few Abon coins I have bought were for letting my 2-1/2 and 5 year old nieces have some slabbed coins to play with to encourage their interest in coins. I would never do that with my PCGS coins.

In all cases, buying online is "buyer beware" territory. But some require a lot more awareness than others. SGS certainly is one of them.

You might be able to pick up some cheap PCGS slabs for under $10 for your nieces...

Excellent idea Morgan, but what would I do with all of my staples and gold tape? Also, what about all of my MS70 and PR70 labels as well? Anyways, I am backed up with submissions, but I am still waiting for those 1933 Double Eagles to come in from ranchhand.

Remember my 4th staple on those coins are for FREE!

Here is a blast from ebay past. Seller Jojaxx22I think we are all familar with his coins from Gallery Grading Company. I was browsing through his latest collection and found this toned half dollar. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8373582495

Now, I'm nto the best grader by any means ( almost a rookie now) but is that a finger print across Franklin's face?

Fingerprint...gorgeous toning, who's nitpicking:D Also it's a FBL but he didn't have time to picture the reverse. He's probably too busy "toning" some more Franklins.

SGS coins, avoid that stuff. It is Junk... and..
Abon.. avoid them at all cost as they sell the Junk.

Hey... if there was an MS70 coin, do you think SGS would put it in a plastic snap together coin holder.

I bought the same brand Collector Safe holder for less that .30 cents a piece.

SGS knows the coin is NOT what they say it is. We do too.

    Unfortunatly, inexperienced individuals do not.

Get the word out ... tell all ... help educate them.

Star Grading on Ebay- I need some advice !!!!

Hey folks, please help me out here; this week I've bought a total of three St. Gaudens & Liberty Double Eagles from this Aboncon guy on Ebay. I'm a newbie and I didn't look here first. My mistake. I was impressed with all that MS-64 and MS-65 garbage. I paid roughly $725 per coin for them. I'm wondering what I should do now?? Maybe I should try to get my money back? Or should I send them into a PCGS grader to "legitimize" them and get a "real" grade on them? What do you guys think? Will I lose money at the price I paid for them? Should I ride it out? I'm new to this and after reading the comments on here I won't be buying any more coins from this guy. I'm thinking about leaving him 3 negative feedbacks as well and take my lumps when he slams me for it. Somebody e-mail me and tell me what you'd do with these coins now.
    Thanks for being here !!!!

I would try to send them back----if he won't take them back then this is a leason to be learned---search them out before you buy!
I really don't think he is selling fake coins so I don't think PCGS is really the way I would go---he overgrades but I've never heard of him selling fakes.

Howdy seashellman - Welcome to the Forum !!

I agree, send them back for a refund if possible. If not, then you need to decide what else to do. That would depend on the dates, mint marks and true condition of the coins. It may or may not be worth while to have them graded by another TPG depending on that.

Can you post large, clear pics of the coins ?

    My E-Bay Double Eagles

    thanks for replying. This Abon guy does post accurate photos. The photos of the coins are the coins I received. I don't know how to post photos on this board, but if you log it to Ebay, in the search field, just punch in the item number and you can see everything, all the photos too. Here they are;

    8425284882 (I paid $879.99)
    8425284882 (I paid $702.00)
    8424407010 (I paid $702.00)

please take a look and see if I at least got my money's worth. Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the help.

It is likely that your coins are well circulated (Extra Fine condition or so). Since gold tends to retain it's luster even after circulation he can get away with a lot in terms of overgrading them, without raising the suspicions of non-collectors. In that grade the coins would have little value above their bullion content, and with gold at about $560/oz (at the moment) it seems that you may have overpaid by a good bit, but I'd understand his unwillingness to accept a return on gold bullion when the spot price has fallen about $150/oz in the last month. It's still worth a try, though. Just let him know that you are disappointed with the quality and see what he says.

Good luck, you unfortunately got you intro to numismatics lesson from one of the guys that is a black eye to the industry,I wish you well!

the 02S looks VF35-XF40 (see how worn the coronet is, it is worn all the way into some of the letters of LIBERTY, especially the R) and the 1890 has XF45-AU50 details, but that gouge on Liberty's cheek is so bad that this coin is ungradeable at a reputable third party grading company. That coin is worth it's bullion value only. Two of the numbers you list are the same, what was the third coin?

    Ebay coins from Abon

    Thanks, here's that third coin's auction number;

    8425284838

I did e-mail them and told them I had overextended myself on my credit card, blah, blah, blah and I wanted to return the coins. They said no problem as long as they are returned within 10 days of receiving the coins and are in their original packaging, which they are. Shipping is not refundable ($15 per coin) so I'll lose $45 but I'll consider myself lucky if I get my money back on this adventure. I'll post whatever happens here so you guys wil know. Thanks again!!!!!!!

IMO the last one you posted is overgraded. I would send them back and be thankful you have learned a CHEAP $45.00 lesson.

i agree there are too many marks to be a 65, but I also think it is lightly circulated. It is the best coin in the group that you bought, but it's probably not worth what you paid. The telltale signs of wear are on the eagle's left wing (close to the viewer) up near the upper left. Do you see the darkened spots that just don't gleam like the surrounding parts? That is the wear. I'd guess AU53 or 55.

...I could not agree more I purchased 30 supposed to be ms 70 roorevelt dimes.)one was rusty-3 with big bag marks.two more with blemishes on roosevelts face. The best of the lot could be uncirculated.I did not expect ms 70 coins when I bid on them but I did think they would be mint state. In my opinion SGS is a farce set up to relieve the unwary of there money

    Abon Coins/SGS Grading on EBAY

Hey everybody, thanks for the information. I just wanted to give you the update. I did return all three coins I bought from them and they did refund all of my money the same day they got the coins back. I only lost the shipping, and this all happened the week after gold took that freefall, so I was pleasantly surprised. So I think I'll just not leave any feedback at all on these guys. I feel fortunate. I won't be buying anything else from them, from here on out I think I may need to stick with the slabbed coins from one of the big three grading services. Thanks again guys, and if anyone has any more information I may need to know about buying more of these type coins on Ebay, please pass it along. I'm a rookie to gold coins.

    Sgs Ms 70

For those who havn't seen this GEM before.
Bought on eBay from a major SGS seller who
has over 5,000 sales and only 6 FBs from other sellers himself
and I might add in a little over one year.
None of which happens to be Aboncom. Strange ?
    Buy a roll at the bank,send to SGS,viola - resell as SGS MS 69 or 70 !

Aboncom has me blocked on eBay,not here though, hows that grab you ABONCOM ?
    SMILES ? Not a good eBayer ?
The aboves been seen in your nasty feedback, even when you're left a neutral you leave a negative.
Way to go,great way to build confidence.
