That is true to a degree. But if the coin is slabbed by a reputable grading company as well - you have a much better idea of what to expect. Again only true to a degree. For the top four grading companies do guarantee the grade of the coin. The others do not. There will always be variance between individuals. But with the better grading companies the grade is not assigned on the basis of what just what 1 individual says it is. There are 3 and sometimes 4 graders who must agree as to the grade of a coin before it is slabbed. That at least helps in regard to varying opinions of individuals. Please understand - I am not defending the grading companies. I am just trying to make sure that those who are less familiar with them and how they work - do understand how they work so that they can make their own informed opinions about them.
< SGS is no more a grading service than you or I writing MS70 on a stapled 2x2. They are owned and operated by the eBay powerseller Aboncom, who preys on newbies selling their "America's Grading Company" garbage.> Sorry but they ARE a grading service. Although most all of their coins are submitted by Aboncom, they do accept outside subissions and grade/slab them for a fee. Ok so they don't use the same standards as some other grading services. There is no law that says they have to. you don't like that they don't use the same standards as PCGS, well guess what neither does NGC. So I guess NGC isn't a grading service either? The only Grading service not owned by dealers that make a living buying and selling coins is ANACS.
If you work at ICG, you are not even allowed to own collectible coins! Back to Star Grading Service...OK...let's play your game. Send me your coins and I will grade them for you. I'll stick them in a 2x2 and write down MS70, or for proof coins, PR70. Let's see...I'll charge only $5 and will give you a beautiful word document certificate on white paper that I graded your coin. I'll seal the 2x2 with gold foil tape because that's what Midas's Grading Service (MGS for short) does for their customers. Wait...I also have some coins for sale graded by the "king" of all grading services...Midas! You want a MS70 1950-D Jefferson nickels, I just happen to have a roll of these beauties. Moderns more your game?...hold on...let me check my pocket...well look at here, a 1984-D cent ready for a MS70 grade. Yup...that's right folks, I am a legitimate grading service. For submissions forms and group rates, please drop me an email and I will get them out to you. Also, I need a day to go to the bank so I can pick up a couple rolls of coins and get them graded as MS70 too so submission turnaround is only 4 to 6 weeks! Please check out the beautiful viewing window, the gold tape, and heavy duty staples which we actually squeeze with pliers BEFORE we ship your coins back to you! So now I am as legit as Star Grading Service!!
I might have to use all four staples for that one instead of three...and did you say, "some"...man these babies are popping out everywhere. I would add insurance when you ship them...
Hey Midas. Do you charge extra for safe-sealing 2x2's??????? How fast can you fix me up with a complete set of MS-70 Silver Eagles's?
I have to check my population reports...let's see my index filing system says (and I am quoting): "Alot!" Sorry, I do not offer self sealing paper slabs but I charge more if you want 4 staples instead of 3. Squeezing the staples with pliers is part of Midas Grading Service. 1933 Gold Double Eagles get the extra staple for FREE. Did you like my certificate? (page 3) Rick...MS73 grades are for my China Exports only, sorry, not available in the free world. I have "alot" of MS70 2005 nickels...
Question It seems to me there was another grading service someone was hawking on ebay. I was thinking it was bcg or something like this. I remember seeing it or something like it back when I first joined this board. Of course that was a WHOLE month ago. I tried some ebay searching but can't seem to find it now and all I really remember was that I recall a B in the name. Is old age getting me quicker than I thought?? I also tried searching this board and no it was not Bob's coin grading services. So I can no longer find it. Any clues anybody? Oh and at least with SGS I could afford to own a whole set of PR70's. I think I will stick with PCGS and NGC, but (big sigh) only the pr69's. Mark
And I agree...when my buddy started working with ICG it was said that he had a offer to work with PCGS--but he took ICG even though with them he couldn't collect coins...he signed a paper with them and he can still keep up on his Sample Slab collection but that's it. Speedy
Hey Midas, I tried looking for your web site to see if the coin you graded as AU89 was on your registry yet. By the way, would you mind using bailing wire on my holder instead of staples next time!!!
Actually, I upgraded my staples to "galvanized staples". This will provide years of protection. My bailing wire supplier went Chapter 7. Rick...let's *talk* about your submisssions later... Remember the 4th staple will cost more unless you are submitting 1933 Double Eagle gold's. These submissions get the extra staple (which is now galvanized) for free! Also, I seal all of my 2x2 cardboard slaps with gold foil tape for your "peace of mind". Last but not least, you get this certificate of authenticity so that you know your coins are handled and graded by the king of grading companies, Midas Coin Grading Services (MGS for short) As for that AU89 grade?? Again, these grades are ONLY for my Far-East marketplace (especially US Trade Dollars) and I am surprised you found that. I must have a "mole" in my MIS department that I need to address ASAP. Remember, only $5 per submission and your coin(s) will be returned in 4 to 6 weeks (not counting weekends, football games, vacation, and poker games with my buds where we only play with MS70 graded coins from MGS Grading). My website in under construction (and attack) by grading companies like SGS because of the business we have been doing, so please be patient.
I saw this thread link in one of the questionable sellers' feedback: http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=7720&page=2&pp=15 They threatened litigation?
Midas- Why only charge $5 or $10 dollars when you can charge $25 or $30. all you have to do is go here http://www.air-tites.com/ATLoop.htm and order some of the generic slabs. Attach your labels and... Whalla! You can now charge $20 more. Just think $20 for $1.75. Now thats just plain business sense right there. I don't care who you are. Oh! BTW I was thinking that you should put another sticker on your slabs that says your supported by USNA. United States Numismatic Association. I was thinking maybe a silver holo or something as such.
