Don't see that many of those rare 1846 half dimes up for auction at the same time. Looks like a liquidation of half dimes from "The Old Orchard Collection", based on explanation provided by Heritage Auction. Anyone know more about who/what is behind the "Old Orchard Collection"? I count 9 of them lots 92050 through 92059. Only one in my price range and I don't expect it to stay there. (not that it matter I just drop a bundle on a new bike last night and now can't chase the coins)
Oh my, you're right. 9 of them. Wow. I already have one, so I won't be bidding. Mine was NGC slabbed, VF details - cleaned, photos below.
Okay, lol, 10. That's my counting limit, unless I take the shoes off. 10 out of the 250 PCGS estimates to have survived - in one auction.
Yeh. I did an extensive search on the internet on "Old Orchard Collection" and came up goose eggs. Would like to hear/read the story about that collection or numismatist behind it.
I looked more closely at the 1846 half dime lots, and the one that jumped out at me as possibly being undergraded is Lot 92054, PCGS graded F-15 in OGH. That one looks more like a VF-20 or 25 to me, based on the grades given on the other lots.
IMO, it looks closer to VF-20 than F-15. The PCGS Price Guide has F-15 at $1,800 and VF-20 at $2,000, and the bidding reflects what may be an under-graded coin. BTW, congratulations on your 1846 H10. At this point, my closest coin relative to yours is her big sister 1846 Dime. Dan
Heritage is not among my favorites. They have great items to show but I have found similar coins and currency, in various grades, at other sites with more competitive pricing. Just my opinion.
See post #5, I've already admitted culpability. And no, I'm not infallible so I would not be surprised to see it happen again in the future.
