While I collect Roman Republican (have quite a few) I have zero admiration for the men represented on the coins any more than for the tyrants and fools that followed. That is something I have never understood. Collecting Caligula does not mean I admire him any more than spending a dime means I liked Franklin Roosevelt. I also have no use for breaking history into neat packages and only knowing about the ones that appeal. There is one really good reason IMHO for including Augustus and stopping your collection there. Volume I of Roman Silver Coins by Seaby stops with Augustus so collecting Tiberius means you have to buy another book. Of course I'd prefer you buy volume I of Millennium Sear which goes through the Flavians which would open up the rest of the Twelve Caesars (another start/stop collection idea I don't like).

Still my 'what I like' collection has its limits. I show here with excessive frequency my John VIII Byzantine (not bad for 'really late Roman'). I do not really like machine made coins but I can collect the last of the old school 'hit them with a hammer' issues like the Russian wire money. We ll collect what we like and what we can afford. Buying coins because you think you should is rarely satisfying; buying coins with money you don't have can have a downside, too.

John VIII - next to last Byzantine emperor and 'stopper' for poor people like me.

Peter I, Russia, wire AR kopeck - Part of Peter's plan to bring Russia into the modern world was to make Russian coins like those of the other European nations. That is the reason I have any Russian coins.
