It could be a S-48 but I'd need extreme closeups of the reverse to know for sure. The reverse isn't good enough to attribute unless there are stars between the denticles. I don't see any with the current pic, do you have another pic that shows the stars? Ribbit Ps: Look at LIBERTY's position above the hairline to see it isn't a S-59 and also the 1 in the date isn't right for a S-59: http://www.largecents.net/husak/s47.jpg http://www.largecents.net/husak/s48.jpg http://www.largecents.net/husak/s59.jpg
Someone that touts themself like he does, you'd think you could trust their judgement and I've actually read all of his write-up on his auctions and with that, I can see how peeps would be ticked off with his grading skills and there are only a handful of peeps I would buy from sight unseen but they are friends I trust. Chuck is not a friend, he's a name in a book so I'd want to see his coins before buying. However, I believe someone said the OP coin appears to have been tooled? If that's the case and Chuck didn't catch it or if he did, he didn't point it out, so that makes me think twice about buying from him without careful scrutiny of the coin. :kewl: There was another seller I always thought had nice coins until someone informed me the coppers were tooled and mint marks were altered on several coins they were selling and had sold. Now I won't buy anything from "her". Thanks for bringing that thread to my attention. :thumb: Ribbit
I've bought some coins from Chuck F and each one was overgraded. I kept the coins because they weren't that expensive and I didn't want to be bothered with it. I don't shop there any more.
The "XF" 24-D Lincoln I got from him had not wheat lines and no separation between the cheek and jaw. I called it VG. When I stated this to him, he reiterated his prowess and said that they were noted for weak strikes. After I returned it anyway, I was threatened not to leave a neg. And, BTW, I have since found out that I will never buy anything from him again - he has me blocked from bidding.
While I have no problem with the seller, I treat him just like all of the others. I do not care what they grade the coin - I decide what I grade it and what I think it is worth. This coin does have some very nice details and I am not sure what I think I would pay for it. And to the OP - if this is your dream coin check heritage to see what similar coins go for. In this case I would look for cleaned and recolored coins to see what might be fair. In all honesty I do not usually win coins from chuck(maybe 1 over the years) since they usually sell for more than I am willing to pay. So determine what you think it is worth and go for it. Personally I like Tom Deck and Shawn Yancey. Yes cost a little more, but worth it. I do look for Shawns auction on Ebay. I did notice the one new website mentioned. Will have to check that one out.
I bought from Shawn Yancey once and was pretty satisfied. His prices on non-copper coins seem to be quite good. I felt I did about $200 better than I normally would have on that 1838-O dime. Not only was it undergraded, it was also a very choice coin and priced low for the slabbed grade.
LOL most all I ever look at and dream about are some of his large cents. I never really look at the other pages. I will have to check them out later.
Fudge! I hate it when that happens to me and it usually does! All I dew is shrugged my shoulders and say . . . . there's always the next one. :thumb: Ribbit Ps: My 1807 Comet Variety should be in by first of next week and I'll post it when it arrives. Plus, I have a lot of state issues (colonial coppers) I still haven't posted so I will try to get them posted this week.
