RIC IV 672 Post your bronzes of Septimius Severus!
LOVE that sestertius---looks ancient and has loads of eye-appeal.... Surprisingly, due to my deep fondness of the 'big bronzes', it seems all my coins of him are silver.
Now that's a very nice SS. I'm not home so I don't have access to my catalog. I don't have many bronzes of SS, and those I have are provincials such as this one:
Sweet pickup, Edward. My only bronze of his is a provincial. Septimius Severus (193 - 211 A.D) Æ 27 Anchialus, Thrace O: AY K L CEP CEYHROC PE, laureate, draped bust right. Very nice sestertius Eduard! I had one some time ago but let it go not knowing how scarce they were. Septimius had a huge number of varieties with provincials that makes him one of my favorites. Here is my only Septimius Severus. I was underbidder on two in the last Leu sale SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS. 193-211 AD. Æ SestertiusStruck 195 AD. Laureate bust right, drapery on left shoulder / Virtus standing left, holding parazonium, crowning Septimius who is standing left, holding Victory on a globe and a spear. No idea whatsoever. Possibly there were new workers or some change in techniques that came with the new administration. It is also interesting that the production of sestertii fell off greatly after the first couple years. There probably were many Commodus and earlier coins still circulating so the need was realized to be absent. While the coins are not rare, perfect ones don't show up often. Did someone get carried away here? I thought the estimate was plenty high but it was doubled. https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=132887 Your coin is a very respectable specimen. This is a favorite type but hard to find really nice. The reverse legend begins DIVI M PII F commemoration the famous reverse adoption where Septimius claimed to be the son of the late Marcus Aurelius. I could not afford a full legend VF and feel lucky to have one with many clear letters.
Thank you, all, for posting your great coins of Septimius Severus. Great examples, all of them. Love this particular sestertius, struck on a massive planchet. My other bronzes of Septimius Severus:
