Agreed. I would love to read and contribute more to world coins threads, but I am not interested and I guess lost as well when it comes to ancients.
That's a relief! Your comments to me just simply gave off a vibe like it was personal or something. Not the first time I've been wrong
it seems to me that there is some misunderstanding of what new sections would mean. neither would be getting buried in any way. it would just be a convenience for all concerned. the reaction is a little surprising...
=> yah, we love you "world dudes" as well, green (well, I do anyway) ... "I" personally think that if the rest of my awesome ancient-crew would merely remember/respect to preface their threads with "Ancient", then it would be far easier to blast-through our wonderfully combined section ... I agree with a few other members that have mentioned that new coin-avenues have been opened-up due to this great big coin-melting-pot section ... hey, we all have our go-to favourites, but every now and then I sneak a peek at your cool 1700-1800 German coins, or those awesome big, fat English coins that look like hockey pucks!! I think it would be a shame to break-up this place and make it two dull parties, rather than one rockin' good coin-fest!! (I want to go on record as continuing to be "one amazing coin-section")
I have voted yes, but rather hastily....I too love to see SOME of the newer world coins, It is easy enough to see whats what and when alerts tell me a thread has received further posts, I just click and go there. usually I only check out the really new threads every three days or so...... The only downside is having to look at and hear the same discussions about those god awful slabs!
There is absolutely no suggestion I support more than this. If we could go one step further and separate out things made to be collected and sold for profit by the mint rather than issued for people to spend, I'd even read some of the US. As it is, I am happy to have the CT just as it is. Do remember that any of our postings you find offensive can be made to disappear simply by clicking 'Ignore' on our profiles.
The interest for world (non-Ancient) coins ebbs and flows. That said, there is far less passion here for non-Ancient coins beyond the grade and rarity. Collectors of Ancients, on the other hand, enjoy putting the coin in some sort of historical context. This is less so for world coins (and still even less for American coins). I write this as someone who has an almost equal interest in English/British coinage and medals (from 1660-1753) as I do for Ancient Roman coinage. We have many expert and knowledgeable numismatists of British coinage here, for example. We should avail ourselves of this valuable resource, also. Unfortunately, world coinage discussion on this site too frequently starts and ends with a discussion about a coin's grade, without a further discussion of the associated history . guy
Unfortunately for the reputation of the hobby, too many coin collectors seem to have only one question about their coin: "How much is it worth?" Ancients are not alone in having interesting side stories. On occasion we see posts that tell us something about why we might want to care about coins shown. Those posts are what make CT fun.
I don't see how anything you wrote has to do with simply splitting one forum into two for convenience. If you like Ancients, great, go click on the Ancients forum. If you like World, great go there. All of what you stated above may be true, but why one forum? That's like saying all Ancient history and modern history should all be in one book. Nope, sorry, cant have separate books on separate topics - all has to be jumbled together in one big huge-ass book. Go read through all the ancient history in order to find what you are looking for in modern history. Makes no sense in my opinion, but seems I am outnumbered. So be it.
This has come up before. The decision was not then and is not now ours to make. The owners like it the way it is.
