I bought this ancient Greek coin, only because I liked the image of that weird and beautiful fish on the reverse.I said it might reveal some of the known species that lived there by that time, just like fossils. I abstained from posting the obverse showing the king, due to the poor condition. I like your comments whatsoever..
man, i'm not sure what that is ....i can't really make it out. i don't see a fish...but i don't know what i see.
Thanks JA.. It's a bust. Here's another scan of the reverse. Have you noticed the lettering to the right up? If it's a weird fish, it's head left with mouth open and maybe something like a thread out of the mouth. The coin weighs 3.22 g.
Too hard for me to make anything out of the image, but I think I see the 'gaping', wide open mouth...and 'whiskers'??? Well, I 'see' all sorts of things on coins (JA once suggested I stop inhaling airplane glue).....so I'll take a wild guess and suggest a 'catfish'.
It's not a fish. It's an elephant. The coin is in ragged shape so you can pretty much see anything you want in the clouds. Looks like a coin of Demetrios I.
I'll have to concede to JA...my second guess would have been a Hippo or Rhino...but now I definitely 'see' an elephant, even without an example to compare it too---or even without 'airplane glue' LOL
Is this what we call a tiger fish ? The Greeks were famous for shipping and probably fishing as well. They were like islands in the Mediterranean or Aegean Sea. I don't know. I have to stick to science and admit it's 95% an elephant or anything, but not a fish. However, if it turns to be a fish.. then it would really be considered as a Big one. LOL...
