Well, how I ended up with them isn't all that exciting... I took a chance and bought the whole group as an auction lot. I didn't pay a huge amount of money, and I think I made a good call based on the coins that I posted here alone. I'm pretty cautious about anything that appears "rare", but I've only come across I fake so far. This is maybe a tenth of the entire lot, so there may be a few hidden gems in there yet... I still have to post about 20 or so Chinese "square holed" coins that range from the 1600s to the 1800s (according to their flips at least). Keep an eye out for Part II! As for the background of the coins, I'm still working on that.
With foreign coins I'm always amazed at how many amazing pieces you can acquire with little funding. When I run out of money I buy foreign coins
I agree! When I started collecting coins again I decided to start with US coins (which is odd because I'm Canadian... lol), but I quickly realized that it's really not my thing. I switched focus to a handful of other countries (neither of them Canada.. lol) and I find that the quality of my collection has vastly improved, now that I can buy BETTER quality coins for LESS money. That said, now I'm left with a sizable amount of US coins I need to liquidate... too bad I don't have anything all that impressive!
You have a bunch of polished coins too, don't you Spock? Have you tried Biox on any of them? Undiluted Biox has a odd effect on copper, but I was thinking it would possibly strip the polish from the coin and give it an opportunity to retone. I dunno... I don't really want to experiment on this coin but it's the only polished one I have. It does have some nice details...
