Threads like this are quite fun if you put the more obnoxious windbags on ignore. You can read one side ranting back and forth at themselves. Or just ignore it.
How do you suppose PCGS or NGC would grade these Segs coins: http://www.linumis.com/images04/25964.jpg Segs MS60, AU58 http://www.linumis.com/images06/29417.jpg http://www.linumis.com/catalog.php?categoryId=010120015&itemType=uscoins http://www.linumis.com/images01/19852.jpg Segs MS65
Well it certainly appears to be worth your time as you chose to post some comments having nothing of importance or worth! Guess I posted about this nonsense before. Anyway, I have not changed my opinion of this type of post by @britannia40. @Owle asked: How do you suppose PCGS or NGC would grade these Segs coins: http://www.linumis.com/images04/25964.jpg Segs MS60, AU58 http://www.linumis.com/images06/29417.jpg http://www.linumis.com/catalog.php?categoryId=010120015&itemType=uscoins http://www.linumis.com/images01/19852.jpg Segs MS65 The coins you picked can have several grades and all of them would be OK. For example, take the Bust Halves. One of the principle owners of Legend Numismatics has put in print something to the effect that "truly Uncirculated" Bust half dollars are extremely rare. Dave Bowers has written that coins that were once graded AU are now graded MS! That is the problem. Now, much of grading is strictly an "informed" guess based on what the coin is worth. However, for our own good, we all need to have personal standards as to how much "rub/cabinet friction/wear/loss of luster" on the high points of a coin make it AU for us and our money. Many times, our opinion will not match the TPGS and each of them may be as far as one point in disagreement for MS and many $$$$ of difference if the point is at the AU/MS line. We all have read that SEGS, ANACS, and ICG are insignificant when it comes to grading; nevertheless, in many cases coins such as those in your test are often graded exactly how NGC/PCGS would. Buy the coin, not the label. PS As for the dime at the end. I'm AU and IMO none of the top TPGS's should grade it MS regardless of its color.
Generally true that there have been upgrades from AU to MS, but not with the Segs coins, I doubt many people have gotten them to cross or upgrade. SEGS has a one man band operation. ICG has Skip and Randy as the main graders, a little loose but that is how they are regarded in the marketplace and hard to sell. Anacs sells at a grade less too, accurate but can't compete with NGC and PCGS. But no question that PCGS has gotten somewhat looser in the last few years.
And on the Segs guarantee that Briggs will tape over the "old" grade and regrade it without knowing what the old one was in a completely objective manner, what kind of fools does he take us for? The way I would combat serious over-grading by the usual Mickey Mouse grading companies, or the second tier ones like A/I, if I had a lot of money tied up in them and had been ripped off, would be to have numismatic authorities assess the coins and have letters from them of real grading standard grades and values and then bring that to the ANA, a court. etc.. NGC has the best guarantee in the business.
If the company guarantees your coin's grade, then they should stand by it, plain and simple. If it does not, then it is just a fraud. Does not surprise me that SEGS would not. Also, it doesn't matter what you paid for it. If the guarantee states that they will pay you the difference in fair market value then that is what it should pay. Sounds like SEGS has a few defenders here (friends of Larry maybe). I don't envy you trying to take them to court. Definitely sounds dishonest. Stinks!
That's 30 minutes I'll never get back. First two pages I was siding with SEGS, but then I found myself siding with the OP and hoping he will sue SEGS. Curious to know how it played out?
This turned into a very contentious thread which is unfortunate since a lot of knowledgeable and respectable members on both sides seem to have been dragged in. If anything though this has made me leery of buying or using SEGS...
I only got through 10 pages of this farce. Is anyone out there a real attorney that can explain that SEGS is now an LLC? I believe that stands for a "Limited Liability Corporation". It just might be that the LLC is no longer liable for the original SEGS liabilities. That could be why they are so popular.
I believe, it doesn't matter what he paid for the coin because the guarantee states all SEGS coins are guaranteed and they would pay the difference if a coin downgraded and they would pay the difference in the grade/s. To me, that is crazy of any TPG to make that kind of guarantee even if you were the only one at the TPG to grade coins just because of what you might give a grade one day doesn't mean you would give the same grade the next day. Coin grading is not an exact science, this is the reason why it's crazy to even make that kind of guarantee in the first place. But they make that kind of guarantee to get submissions/business but when it works against them, then they don't want to pay out the guarantee, it seems to always be that way.

If Ollyoccia is totally correct about what it states about the guarantee, then I believe, it doesn't matter what he paid for the coin because the guarantee states all SEGS coins are guaranteed and SEGS would pay the difference if a coin downgraded and they would pay the difference in the grade/s.
