Lajos Kossuth, known as the father of Hungarian democracy, was an important Hungarian revolutionary leader (and briefly, President of Hungary) in the late 1840s. He was exiled after the revolution against Austrian rule was lost in 1849, after which he made his way to the United States as an honored dignitary. To help fund his (ultimately unsuccessful) attempts to rule from exile and return to power, he had a couple sets of promissory notes printed in New York and Philadelphia.</p><p><br /></p><p>My secret santa found for me a pair of remainder notes from the 1852 Philadelphia print run. These promissory notes are for 1 and 2 silver forints (equivalent to a silver dollar). The most interesting thing about these notes is that they have 4 and 8 cent US Champion of Liberty stamps commemorating Lajos Kossuth, with first date of issue cancellations bearing the small coat of arms of Hungary. It&#039;s something exciting I&#039;ve not seen before on these remainders, with a great connection to Kossuth and beautiful stamps and cancellations!
