I threw everything at this Trajan As, well 800 Aud in an Aus auction (Nobles) and sure enough somebody wanted it more than me and sold for 1200 Aud. I was devastated. :sour: 2020254.jpg

TypeCoin971793 Just a random guy on the internet

I bid on this one at auction, bid my max and then some, but I ran out of juice. I would have bid higher had I the money, but oh well.

Then I saw it pop up on VCoins... for double the price. Not only was the coin now more than I was willing to pay, I was not going to give the dealer such a tidy profit margin simply because he had more money than me. But oh well.

LOL, that made my day! A fitting end to the tale.

An awesome story David, congratulations on a beautiful acquisition! It's interesting that the three examples of this rarity are all from different dies. (Mine on top)

Not only from different dies, but very different styles! Your example has an almost Vespasian-like appearance, my worn one was engraved in a fairly pedestrian manner (as @dougsmit might say, a Friday afternoon die), while my OP coin was quite elegantly rendered.

Many years ago I was looking at one of the Buy or Bid sales and saw this Trajan denarius. At the time it was the nicest one I had ever seen but the rather impressive price tag deterred me from buying it. Years later I saw another Trajan denarius of the same type from the same seller. I thought " This is the second nicest one I had ever seen." I decided this time to buy it. After committing to purchase I looked through the cats to see how this coin compared to the one I saw all those years befor and discovered It Was the Same Coin. Wow. This is a great type but it does come up from time to time. This exact coin sold in 2009 for $2070 (including buyer's premium) at CNG in an eSale and the 1975 pedigree adds some value. You'll find another one :)
