Beatstreet. I've done one box of halves and found nothing. All sealed, from Loomis, and that was enough for me. I found that I had better luck from the tellers that offer for me to go through CWR and what's in their till when I'm picking up or dumping straps and rolls of standard denominations. Have you done quarters and dimes looking for silver? Oddly enough I have and have found more silver war nickels than silver dimes or quarters while CRH. I've never seen anyone post anything like that (duped with nickels) in the roll searchers threads so this may be an anomaly and it sucks that it happened to you. I'm not even sure if you took it back to the bank they would honor your request for reimbursement or exchange for another box. It is worth the try though.
I don't understand your point here. As a young teenager I feel like 20 dollars is alot to lose for no real reason.
Can you speak for other tellers finding silver. What are your bank's instructions re found silver by tellers?
As long as you replace the money at face value, and your drawer balances, I don't see where there is a problem. I did this at a number of retail jobs. Pulled out (Mercs, Walkers, wheaties, silver certs, silver war nickel, $5 note red seal) never had a problem.
Yeah, I have pretty good luck too with helpful tellers and CRW for finding silver but there just aren't a lot of halves coming across the counter. If you're looking for varieties it requires searching larger quantities of coins to have a fair chance of finding them, and the tellers don't know what to look for. I don't think it odd that you find more war nickels than dimes and quarters, most non-collectors don't know they contain silver. Same for '65 - '70 half dollars.
If they come across something they want to buy, it is their prerogative to do so. They just cannot buy it directly from their own drawer. They must first exchange it with another teller, and from there they can buy it from that teller with their own money. Not all tellers care about interesting stuff like Ikes, silver, etc. But they are usually more than happy to pass it off on to those of us that are.
