I bought my roomie her diamond in a coin shop. Funny thing is . . . whenever we take it to a jewelry store for a cleaning, they express admiration and ask where I got it.
The reason she is selling is that her husband who was the collector died last year and now she's just starting selling some of his stuff off, the coin she showed me was unlike any 2 cent piece that I'd ever seen so when I got home I looked it up in my red book and it looked exactly like the proof. I was thinking of offering around $200.
Be careful when you take nice rocks to a jewelry store for a cleaning. There are places that will switch stones on you.
The question is whether you can tell for sure whether or not it is a proof, and can you accurately judge the coins condition? If it is a PF 63 or better it sounds like a good deal, especially if you can get them to come down more. If it is less the a 63 it is probably over priced.
That's pretty much what I was thinking, I don't have a 1800's proof coin so I'd really like to get it though. If I do I'll be sure to post pics.
