Scarce toned 1850c $5 gold

    On the leather pouches that may have imparted toning due to chemical reactions, they used to use more harsh chemicals that are imparted now in curing leather more likely to react with the copper in the gold coins.

    Well aged, concentrated urine was one component of old time tanning brews. I think it was ammonia that was the main active chemical in it. :yuck:
