You could be fooled by his long reign of 56 years into thinking otherwise, but this Plantagenet king blundered from one disaster to another over his long reign.</p><p><br /></p><p>Things didn&#039;t start out well for Henry, who was just a kid when his loyal supporters had to fight to maintain him on the throne in the First Barron&#039;s War. Things didn&#039;t get better in 1230 when he led a disastrous war against France, which caused a massive revolt at home which he had to put down at great cost. He followed this up with another disastrous war against France in 1242, which didn&#039;t do much to boost his already low popularity. Couple military disasters with terrible foreign policy blunders, such as the time he made a bid to place his son on the throne of Sicily, only to fail miserably,&nbsp; and you start to get the picture. Henry was plain hapless and unlucky.</p><p><br /></p><p>I&#039;d love to say things got better towards the end of his reign, but they didn&#039;t. Poor old Henry planned a crusade to restore his fortunes, and promptly had to cancel his plans due to a rebellion in Gascony. This led to Henry&#039;s barrons getting fed up and doing a coup, which eventually led to the Second Barron&#039;s War.
