I drew first blood when it comes to medieval coinage today. Henry III of England (R. 1216 - 1272), was not exactly the picture of a successful medieval king. You could be fooled by his long reign of 56 years into thinking otherwise, but this Plantagenet king blundered from one disaster to another over his long reign. Things didn't start out well for Henry, who was just a kid when his loyal supporters had to fight to maintain him on the throne in the First Barron's War. Things didn't get better in 1230 when he led a disastrous war against France, which caused a massive revolt at home which he had to put down at great cost. He followed this up with another disastrous war against France in 1242, which didn't do much to boost his already low popularity. Couple military disasters with terrible foreign policy blunders, such as the time he made a bid to place his son on the throne of Sicily, only to fail miserably, and you start to get the picture. Henry was plain hapless and unlucky. I'd love to say things got better towards the end of his reign, but they didn't. Poor old Henry planned a crusade to restore his fortunes, and promptly had to cancel his plans due to a rebellion in Gascony. This led to Henry's barrons getting fed up and doing a coup, which eventually led to the Second Barron's War. Henry III, as usual was a military failure, and he ended up a prisoner of war in his own kingdom.:drowning: Henry III was eventually rescued from prison and lived the last few remaining years of his rule the same way he had prior to his imprisonment, full of failure, embarrassment, and misery. So without further adieu, here is my new coin. TONING ALERT!!! Look at that obverse...oh my God! :D:cool: If you love toning, that is almost an orgasmic experience. Too bad the reverse is not as impressive, but still, that obverse is to die for. ENGLAND, Henry III (1216-1272), Penny, 1.36g., 19mm, Voided Long Cross Coinage, Class 3c, (1248-1250), Nicole - London, crowned facing bust of Henry, i.m. star, HENRICVS REX III, rev., voided long cross with trefoil of pellets in each angle, NICOLE ON LVND, (N.988; S.1364), an attractive, good very fine, toned, darkly on obverse.
