Lovely Saint. I haven't owned one in 15 years or so, since back when spot was @$400-ish. Couldn't afford one now. I have no practical advice, really. I misread the title and thought it said "Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Roll", which sounded intriguing.
To @Jaelus the Hungarian Collector . . . it's a good thing that the grade went up for you. You're going to need the extra forint to feed those Hungarians you collect.
I’d now send it to cac as they don’t recognize the plus grade so as a high end. 65 it will likely get a green bean and a ms 65+ cac will bring more than the $14.50 cac fee
Glad it worked out well for you, and if it's in a new holder it will also highlight the sides of the coins, which is a plus. But on this subject of crack-outs: I'm not an expert on grading, but I would say I am an expert in the VOLATILITY of grading. And I think that to accurately predict that most (all ?) of us have a shot at a 1-numerical increase, let alone a "+" designation (which is like a 1/2 number), is really hoping to draw an inside straight. Now....if somebody knows from multiple long-time Saint collectors or someone from CAC said something positive, or a few dealers offer a nice premium or say the coin is definitely undergraded, the odds would certainly be in one's favor. But we've had TONS of GTG threads and even Saint veterans can be off by 1-2 numbers. Submitting to CAC seems to be the low-risk option, IMO, for most of the situations like yours. But congrats on it working out for you. And again, those old NGC holders really hide the sides (not sure why they ever used them).
Yup, missed that, but modified my thoughts to be more general. Glad it worked out for him but considering how wide our guestimates are on grading, it's FAR from an exact science.
Based on a single set of mediocre photos, it’s hard to give sound advice. NGC “upgraded” it to MS65+ which means it’s a “really nice 65” and they got it right in the first place.
Even if you had the great photos that HA provides, I'm not sure we'd all agree. Although being allowed to look leisurely for 2-3 minutes instead of 30-45 seconds does give us an advantage over graders who might see the coin after looking at 200 coins earlier in the day and might have tired eyes or whatever.
