This is an 1892 (first year of issue ) Shilling from South Africa. I have a love of SA coins, and collect them whenever I find them. Besides Krugerrands, most of my South Africa silver is circuated.
South Africa is a beautiful country. When I was a child, we sailed up its coast as passengers aboard a Greek freighter. Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth. Lovely. I had a holed ZAR sixpence or shilling like that on the old Holey Coin Vest. Also once had a shilling on which someone had carved a top hat on top of Oom Paul Kruger's head, and added a meerschaum pipe in his mouth. I've since seen several of those; I suspect they must've been Boer War "trench art".
Very nice!! I don't have one yet. The price has been slowly dropping on these in OGP, which is how I will get one when the time is right. Your coin is especially sharp with the black of the slab behind it! I like!!
1947 5 shillings. These coins are big and heavy. 80% silver. They switched to a 40% alloy in 1950, I believe.
