I agree....All total scrap metal.... @Ryro go ahead, toss them in an envelope and send them my way. I will dispose of them properly I will even be so generous as to pay postage Ok, now that that's over.... I voted: 6 - That lion is beautiful! One of the best I have yet to see on a coin. 3 - I get it, it's rare and whatnot...but that Victory has me drooling. And now...Last but certainly not least. This is my number 1 favorite of the coins posted: 10 - Who doesn't love a Venus Victrix? Plus, I've never seen her in a sestertius. Badonk... As one of the most illustrious musical artists of our time, Bubba Sparxxx, said: "Booty Booty Booty, Rockin' Everywhere"
That is a fun poll you set up. All of your coins are diverse in localities/ themes. Reminds me of my top 10/ a little bit of here and there. I see you had a fantastic 2020/ and I wish you a super duper 2021 in health/ prosperity and new coin additions....of course John
Haha, your comment about arguing with fools reminded me of something that gave me a giggle fit yesterday. Oh! And beautiful and interesting coins!
@Ryro....Nice selection!...My favs are #9, #3 and #5....But all are really cool coins! Congrats on a good collecting year.
Even without the MSCs, this list of 10 is chockfull of goodies! That I ultimately selected #2, #3 and #4 for the poll should not suggest that I didn't lust after that deliciously chocolately Domna/Venus sestertius, or bemoan the fact that my collection lacks a cool Civil War fourree as well as a Pescennius Niger (!). I really did want to put a tick against all almost of them. You've clearly had a great coin year in 2020, and have also been a wonderful positive force on the board. Let's have more of the same in 2021!
Oh my God Becky, look at that Venus. That one is definitely my favorite (and I can not lie). The Seleukos drachm is also great. I always enjoy your write-ups, happy to see you added some great new additions this year.
Great list @Ryro my favorite by far is the Melita Osiris mummy. That is a truly fascinating Egyptian myth. ...of course I am also partial to the Constans hut. Great list and amusing write ups my friend.
Ryro, You had an exceptional year scoring some great coins ! My favorite is #3, with the Sea goddess on the obverse & a wonderful depiction of Neptune on the reverse . I'm a sucker for serrate denarii too . 2nd place has to go to #1, the huge chunk of Roman bronze . I'm baffled why anyone found a need to test cut this coin . Isn't this unusual for a large cast Republican bronze ? Great patina on this coin too. My 3rd favorite is the lovely sestertius of Marcus Aurelius you gave your father . Great portrait on this coin & it's blessed with an attractive uniform patina. I hope the "old man" appreciates this coin .
#3, #9 and #1 lead my preferences but I need to comment on #5, the Pescennius. I do not see the circumstances where I would buy that coin in my current position as condition snob in training. However it has more legend discernable (with practice!) than many VF coins with good surfaces. Many of these coins have poor surfaces but this one is among the worst that still has underlying detail. On this and on several others on this list we just have to decide whether a coin is better than no coin. I find this group exceptionally well selected when it comes to the types but the condition level makes you wonder how many pigs you kiss to find a prince. I do not have that reverse for a PN and I would love to have one........but that one??? I'm glad it found love over at Ryro's place.
My thoughts exactly on the massive RR bronze. Stacks and Bowers is very reputable and I'm sure their guy knows more about ancients than me. But I would've believed it to be some sort if ancient ding. Why test cut bronze? To make sure no one was hiding silver or gold inside And yeah, pops was ga ga for the coin. I was excited to give it to him and he was more excited to recieve it
