I'm at least one second ahead of you......this time! For Evorlor's benefit, here are some other acronyms. Not all of them refer to coins, though. Chris http://www.stanford.edu/~clint/coinacro.htm
I think "The Blog" Part 2 in Coin Chat (It is a sticky thread near the top) written by Charmy has tons of acronyms, I'm sure there are more acronyms on that thread as well!
I just found this in a box I searched this week. But I don't know if it's an S or a D, both ? Can it enter ?
The mint mark is punched into the die with a punch and hit with a hammer, Creates the female inden for the mark. The engraver hit the punch, then set the punch and hit again for a RPM (Re-punched mark) Triple means he set the punch a 3rd time. If he gets lucky and hits it exactly on the old mark, we don't get much of an error. But if he hits it off location slightly, we have loads of fun ! These guys made me read a lot. Thanks
The scan is all I got. But with the loupe, I see a D. I cannot find a D/S variety listed anyplace. It popped in the tray and I sorted it out for a closer look. I can't see any other doubling. Look at the pic from your right and see what you think ?
That's a really nice example of how the engraver didn't hit the punch hard enough the first time and really gave it a good one on the second hit. Great coin !
Jello, The most interesting thing about this RPM is that it looks like the underlying "S" was a smaller size. Could it have been that the person putting the mintmark on the die accidentally picked up a punch for, say, a dime? Chris
The reason the S on the north of the mint mark is smaller is that is was punched only once in that area. The main mint mark was stuck several times making if go deeper and wider.
The area you see below the S mint mark is light shadow. There are two light sources and that area is shadow from both light shadows.
