Boss - you obviously have a love of coins to be going to these extremes (at least to me)! Your thread has been very educational for me.

Sorry, but I am not a movie fan. I have never heard of "indiana jones and the alien goeey". BTW, just what is a "goeey"?

Boss I have had xylene on my hands & arms more times than I can count. Yeah, it makes them turn white and all dried out, but it aint gonna kill ya. Just use some lotion afterwards and you'll be fine.

And yes, I agree about it not being a good idea to use the plastic tongs, xylene is pretty hot stuff and there is real good chance it would dissolve the stuff. 'Course you could always test it first to see if the tongs hold up.

I do not recommend using any plastics with xylene.

Really, xylene is not all that bad to work with. Compared to other organic solvents, it's not all that volatile, it evaporates slowly. It will dry the skin by removing fats (oils). You should read the MSDS before handling. If your careful, there's really no cause for concern.

Thanks GD and Thad for the clear on xyelene and the tongs. I guess I just try not to get too high as kite on this (using mask now):eek:dd:. I think I will research or start any new post any time I want to try an unfamiliar product or procedure as I have made so many silly mistakes. Thanks Catbert for the compliment!! :high5: Thanks Spock for saying things I don't really understand- strange grammatical sentence structures, though I edit most of my posts as I misspell on my Blackberry at work- sneaking in posts between work. It's hard to type accurately on those little computers). Thanks to Jim, RLM and you other cool cats. Maybe I can meet some of you someday. I will go to the Summer Long Beach Heritage show so anyone PM me if your going when the time comes. I would guess AJ will be there.

My next post will be how to fix my 09 S VDB. I have a good story about that one with Dellars Darkner, presumably contaminated and spoted the coin grey and black and then used MEK, xylene and Verdigone to remove and it calmed way down, but not gone. My 14 D got the same spots (like verdigris/carbon spot look). Verdigone is fixing the 14 D great and those old hairlines I can't even see. Doesn't look like the same coin. You can see it in Jello's "complete Lincoln set". I will post these tonight and call it "Contaminated Dellar's" or something like that. :hail:

I have no idea what you people think plastics are. Anyone want to guess which of these adjectives/phrases is wrong? BTW, there is only one that is wrong.

rigid, flexible, brittle, strong, soluble in xylene, soluble in acetone, not soluble in xylene, not soluble in acetone, solid, liquid, rubbery, acid resistant, chemical resistant, solvent resistant, heat resistant, denser that water, lighter than water, lighter than air, electrically conductive, electrically resistant, good heat conductor, poor heat conductor, will melt, will burn before they melt, will readily decompose, will not readily decompose, etc.

Unless that mask has an activated charcoal filter or supplied air, it is useless and probably worse because it makes you feel safer. If you can smell anything (not just xylene, but the neighborhood skunk also), you mask is not doing you one little bit of good.

I would say soluble in xylene/acetone eventually, poor conductor, good heat conductor, - Oh you put too many questions?? Dick just tell us the answer!

There is no plastic (and only 7 things) that are light than air.

Buy yourself one of those clam shucker devices they use to open watches... it works like a charm.

If you wanted to buy one online or on eBay, just do a search for "watch opener" or "watch case opener".

Any jeweler or watch repair shop would know exactly what you're looking for and could probably point you in the right direction as well.

Sometimes you can beatup the edges of the Airtites a little if you're not careful, but it sure will save your fingernails. Plus the Airtites make a really satisfying creak when you shuck 'em. ;)

    You got it!

Of course you may want to get a fancy one with laser sights and a can opener attachment or something... just kidding... ;)
