Do you have any reason to believe there is one? I have failed to find a sale record but admit I have not put a lot into the search (being a bit short of the price bracket!). The British Museum has been working on their collection for over 200 years so we have to expect them to be a bit ahead. Good luck on the hunt.
There's been one other recent sale. Gorney had it most recently 10 years ago. Before that, ex Leu 17, 1977, 287; Lanz, Slg. Benz Nr. 93; Triton IV, 2000, 395. It has a bit of a cast look, but I don't think that it's ever been condemned:
I pulled out my Triton IV catalog. Lot 395 is the pig kneeler type. This type was 396 BUT it is not the same coin. The Triton coin was centered very differently and had no porosity. I'm not a trusting sort. When I see a 'cast look' coin with a made up provenance, I assume it is fake.
Here's a few more. I just started getting into these and finally got a copy of Alberto Campana's book on the series (in Italian but an illiterate like me can still get around the tables and plates). The book is more rare than the coins!
I don't often look at RR denari to purchase because they too tiny for my eyes to appreciate in hand. However I never knew some were stamped with the legend Italia. Apparently these are pricey based on the acsearch I just did. And you have three......well done.
I am so glad you got out of Greeks and strayed to RR. The price competition is tough enough and you bent the demand side of that curve to my detriment. My condolences to all you RR collectors.
Like you, I enjoy collecting from the Roman Republic. You have an incredible set focused on the Socii War. This was a truly pivotal moment in Roman History, similar to the Hannibal War. Congratulations on capturing the "Other-Side's" coins, and wow! on the quality you acquired. Hats off to your collection! Love your postings.
Only the preview has been posted so far but it looks like another is coming up at Triton: http://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=300160
I love the designs on these... And The first coin pictured her is one I have been dreaming of owning (but likely will not happen, considering what these things cost!)
looks like a lot of interesting things in that auction....and I am sure they will come with a price....it is Triton.
Wow. I didn't notice the preview was up already. I thought it was still from the prior auction. Interesting...
Since a review of Mary Beard's SPQR kicked off this thread, here is a recent talk she gave about the book. A really great lecture if you're interested.
http://cngcoins.com/Coins.aspx?CATEGORY_ID=5121&VIEW_TYPE=0 The Triton preview page without ID's is an opportunity for us to see how many coins you can ID and explain why they got there. A few are 'just perfect gold' but there are a few really special things. Almost all are EF but there is a notable exception to that, Before looking at the link above try to guess what the slightly worn, slightly off center and somewhat porous coin might be. The catalog is listed at $100. In ten or twenty years it may sell for more???
