WoWiE!!! Scari coin Amazing obverese and cool reverse. Here's a Galic warrior of mine from the same year: L. Cosconius M.f. 118 BCE. AR Serrate Denarius (17 MM, 3.53g, 6h). Narbo mint. Helmeted head of Roma right; X (mark of value) to left / Gallic warrior (Bituitus, king of the Averni?)driving galloping biga right, hurling spear and holding shield and carnyx. Great coin! Does your LCS get very many ancients? The only one my local shop had growing up was a Corinthian stater with the Pegasus for $200, which was almost a month's rent 35 years ago. Needless to say I never bought it. John
Technically wasnt my LCS, a coin shop down in texas on vacation. They had around ten of them. Hammered coins, tiberius, postumus, all over the board.
Very nice Roman Republic Denarius, @CoinBlazer ! Serrated were a mystery with a lot of modern opinions. I like the clipping deterrence idea, but it has not been substantiated. Here is one of my Serrated from that same year. RR L Licinius Crassus Cn Domitius Ahenobarbus 118 BCE NARBO Serrated Attic Helmet Gallic Biga Sear 158 Craw 282-3
Great coin @CoinBlazer - here's another from the same year - with a very different look to Roma's portrait. L. Licinius Crassus and Cn. Domitius Ahenobarbus with C. Malleolus C.f. AR Denarius serratus, Narbo, 118 BC Obv: Helmeted head of Roma r.; around, C MA - L - LE - C F; behind, X, Rev: Bearded warrior in fast biga r., holding shield, carnyx and reins and hurling spear; in ex. L LIC CN DOM Size: 3.83g, 20mm Ref: Crawford 282/3; Sydenham 524; Licinia 13
Worth adding that these coins are an interesting issue that @red_spork wrote up nicely in 2015. Between the two posts there are examples of all 5 coins that Crawford describes: 282/1. M Aurelius Scaurus the OP coin from CoinBlazer 282/2. L Cosconius Ryro's coin 282/3. C Malleolus my coin 282/4. L Pomponius red_spork's OP coin in the other thread 282/5. L Porcius Licinus ...the 5th coin is shown in the other thread - as a "missed opportunity" These coins from the colony of Narbo were minted under an unusual administrative structure and I find often misattributed between the 5.
The coins that are out there and the number of people interested must be very small....my latest purchase ...(the same OP coin)
