    Thanks 'Al' !!!

About a year ago I placed the initial required bid and was the only one interested, although it was only about 2/3's of the estimate. I guess the worn surfaces and the obliterated reverse was too much for others to ignore....but I LOVE the portrait and wish the prow was far more visible.

Perhaps, Bing and I can combine them LOL

Okay, but who gets custody? And I don't like the idea of shared custody!

I don't collect Republican either but I knew when I started collecting that I would have to get one of these:

Wow, is that a cast Aes Grave As? approx 300g? 300-211 BCE? Do you have dimensions and weight?

It looks like the Aes Grave. Maybe I'll get one eventually too, they're amazing. But if I'm going to spend $10k, I'd probably fill my Gordian I and II holes first.

You can get them for under $5K. This one was $3200 from CNG:

Anonymous. Circa 225-217 BC. Æ Aes Grave As (63mm, 266.40 g, 12h). Libral standard. Rome mint. Head of bearded Janus; – (mark of value) below; all on a raised disk / Prow of galley right; | (mark of value) above; all on a raised disk. Crawford 35/1; Thurlow & Vecchi 51; Haeberlin pl. 10, 1-16, 4; HN Italy 337; Sydenham 71; Kestner 111-5; BMCRR Rome (Aes Grave) 1-16.

    It is massive.

I don't have an As, but have a few Aes Grave in the smaller denominations. Even my Quadrans (~70g) or Triens (~90g) are huge-as coins... I have a couple uncia, and they are large for their denomination. Cool stuff. @rrdenarius and @ancientcoinguru have really cool collections of Aes Grave.

Yeah if I didn't collect man-faced bulls I think I would focus on aes grave. There's just nothing quite like them. Maybe one day I'll get the whole prow set but that might be going overboard.

The triens and Quadrans are both great coins too.

Maybe this is the right time to invite members to share their Aes grave collections... I'm keen to see what a complete collection looks like.

Wow, what a marvelous set, really impressive. :wideyed:

I don't have to tell you that collecting aes grave/formatum/rude is a waiting game. Even if you have all the money in the world, good examples of the various types sometimes only appear on the market every few years. Well done sir!

Thank you. Fun experience, friends have been very helpful, and my wallet is lighter!

I still need a Semis, As, and Signatum...

One of the biggest problems for me with the big bronzes is storage. I love them though and want several.

I consider the OP coin to be the best possible single RR coin for those who prefer to own just one. Once here or in that other place from which we moved here we discussed a set (number?) of coins representing the span of Roman coins. We differed on the details but I believe many would agree on a set starting with this coin.
