I've been trying to ID this Roman Denarius and found several with the same designs on both sides, but none like this one with the word "MATILI" above ROMA on the reverse. I's silver and 17mm in diameter. It might have been mounted at one time. Has anybody seen one like this one? As you can tell I know very little about Ancient coins but still find them intriguing. Thanks, Mike.
M. Atilius Saranus. 148 BC. AR Denarius Rome mint. SARAN downwards, helmeted head of Roma right; X behind / Dioscuri riding right, M. ATILI below, ROMA in linear border in exergue A Denarius minted during Roman Republic times. Beautiful coin with great toning. I would love to own one. I love that typographic glyph "AN" combo behind Roma's head as well. Awesome. Welcome to the Forum and dark side of coins, you should stay.
Welcome, michael ... curious, if you don't collect ancients, how did you manage to stumble-across that sweet example? => I agree, I'm a big fan of that cool style/trick (neat coin)
C'mon guys , you're making it hard for me to buy a new Bust half . About all I 've been looking at is Greek and Roman coins . Guess I'll have to buy a newbie book for ancients . Anyone want about $2000 of US coin books . lol
Anybody want about $2000 in US Coins? haha. I stopped collecting US when I was 17 and haven't looked back. Come to the dark side. We have cake.
Steve has it. Cake is Canadian for beer. Long drive, though. On a serious "coin" note. My only Republic Dioscuri example; and my only oblong Republic. Mn Cordius Rufus Denarius. 46 BC. RVFVS III VIR, conjoined heads of the Dioscuri right, stars above / Venus Verticordia standing holding scales & scepter, Cupid on her shoulder, MN CORDI behind
