This is exactly the kind of coin where wear adds to its charm : Both the Empress and the eagle seem to fade away to the point where the silhouette is prominent over the details. Very nice Q
Congrats on your top 10 @Roman Collector ! My favourite has to be the Verus coin because it depicts the three graces! My close second would be the Volusian coin depicting a battle scene from the gigantomachy.
Congrats ! , you had a great year with many rare and interesting coins , my preferred are #10 , #8 and #9.
As to be expected, RC, your list is a fun and fascinating selection of numismatic erudition. My favorites are the Three Graces with the "incense" burners, the unlisted Faustina with the veiled bust, and of course that wonderfully cool Deultum-Marcianopolis hybrid.
I had no doubt that you would post another splendid selection of coins accompanied by insightful write-ups this year, @Roman Collector ! My personal favorite is, of course, the veiled Faustina as with all known examples owned by the two of us. Here is the second one once more: Faustina “the Elder” (postumous), Roman Empire, As or Dupondius, c. 141 AD, Rome mint. Obv: DIVA FAVS[TINA], bust of Faustina, veiled, r. Rev: [A]VGUST[A], Vesta standing l., holding palladium and sceptre; in fields flanking, SC. 27mm, 9.05g.
Great list! The Volusian is my personal favourite ... what's not love about an ancient mythological cryptid!
