I found this one with only 7 minutes left on ebay so I couldn't ask on here. But it looked neat and I got it for 2.50. I looked on the websites you guys mentioned but couldn't find one that looked exactly like this one. Luckily I took your advice and only bid low!
It's a Contantine I Obverse and a Quadriga reverse...unfortnatly that's about as good as I can do. there is no Exergue and the Obverse legend is cut. sorry. still, a good deal at $2.50. stainless
Its a commemorative of the death of Constantine the Great with a veiled bust on the obverse and a quadriga with the manus dei on the reverse, issued posthumously. As stainless said, the mintmark in the exergue has been cut off, so no further attribution is possible. They're actually fairly common. The best bet, if you want to start collecting Roman coins, is to read up a lot on www.forumancientcoins.com. Then peruse vcoins.com and some of the other sites mentioned. Be sure to keep an eye on the Open section of this forum too, some members have Roman coins to offer from time to time.
Thanks for the info! The S&H is $3.50. I wish there was some negotiation with SH on ebay, several of these guys have it too high. I guess they figure if the coin goes for a low price then they will at least get some money from the S&H. I got one (1800s) coin for .01 so I am sure they will appreciate the extra money for S&H.
depending how he mailed it, $3.50 is fair....the bubble mailer (assuming he uses one) is $1.00, it cost $1.00 to mail it out, plus gas to get to the PO. stainless
One more question about this coin. I got it today and it looks even better in person. It is pretty smooth all over but is rough around the edges. Just want to confirm that sometimes these coins are that way? It has a rough texture all around the rim.
Thanks. I remembered reading somewhere about looking for file marks on the edges....I don't see that but was worried that it wasn't smooth like the rest of the coin.
