This was just discovered in Turkey... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/science...MASK-dating-1-800-years-uncovered-Turkey.html Reading the article I was curious if there are any depictions of these face masks on Roman coins. I think not.
That's a neat artifact, to be sure! But I had to laugh at "confirming the existence of the Roman Empire in the region" -- the region being Hadrianopolis. I'm pretty sure this confirms the Roman empire was there. Caracalla, AD 198-217. Roman provincial Æ 21.7 mm, 5.81 g, 6 h. Phrygia, Hadrianopolis-Sebaste; Poteitos, archon, AD 198-209. Obv: M AV ANTƱNЄI, laureate and cuirassed bust, right. Rev: ΑΔΡΙΑ APX ΠOTЄITO, Tyche standing, left, wearing kalathos, holding rudder set on globe and cornucopiae. Refs: BMC 25.225,4 var.; SNG Cop 407 (same obv. die); Lindgren 959 var.; Babelon IW 6069.
I'm sure the Romans were at my place, this mask was found a mile from my house, amongst many other Roman things.
i live opposite of the Matillo castellum, near the Stierenbrug. Could be, but it was found under the entrance bridge of the Matillo castellum , a Roman cohort was stationed overthere.
