I looked at it under the old microscope, and thought I might have seen something among the pock marks, so I did an experiment and soaked the thing in some white vinegar for a few days. I know, I know, I would not have done this if the coin was not already trashed, and it looked like it had been cleaned by someone else before me. So after a few days of soaking and rinsing off the excess acid, I went back to the microscope and I think I found an S.</p><p><br /></p><p>I fiddled with the contrast and drew some lines to compare with the known mint mark locations and it matches the one perfectly. Now I know there is still a chance this is not the battered and beaten holy grail, but it looks fairly convincing to me.
