Used properly, it's fine for any coin. It is NOT fingernail polish remover... acetone is the primary ingredient in that, but that crap has other stuff in it too. Go to a hardware store and ask for pure acetone... it'll come in a metal can. Not really expensive. Get a glass or ceramic jar (Acetone will melt plastic, no joke) and pour some in there... drop in a coin you want to let soak in there, almost anything should be fine in it save for copper, which can turn slightly pinkish when soaked in acetone. Cover it, acetone is easily evaporated if not covered, and if it all evaporates, all that crap you just removed from the coin will be deposited right back on it. You can soak it as long as you want, I typically give most coins an hour or so, but I have left them in there for two or three days (change the acetone every 6 hours or so) to get all the crud off. When you're ready to pull the coin out, you can use your fingers if you want, acetone is non-toxic. Drop the coin onto a couple paper towels, quickly pat each side down (don't rub, just a little pat dry should be fine) and you're done. If it still won't come off, I'll grab a toothpick and poke at it very gently until it comes off. Usually does the trick. Some people suggest rinsing in distilled water once it comes out of the acetone bath, I personally don't see the benefit in that given how fast the acetone evaporates off the coin... the pat dry isn't really necessary because of that, but I don't like the way acetone feels when it evaporates from my skin, haha.
