The banks get their rolls from a coin delivery service like brinks or loomis etc. My bank orders 2, $500 dollar boxes of halves for me every week. the coins get shipped in, I pick them up go through them and then deposit the ones i don't want at a different bank. If a bank accumulates more coin then they need in their vault they ship it back out to the big delivery service.

I don't know how these companies work but in my imagination they have big counting machines that kind of stir the coins up and then re-roll them in new paper rolls. Recently HelloftheNorth has also mentioned getting complete boxes of 2011 dimes, which is a bummer. I think it is really unlikely that would happen with Half dollars as I don't think they are minting very many of them anymore. Maybe someone who knows how many new halves are minted on average in recent years could enlighten us?

Anyway there is a reason they call this coin roll hunting and not coin roll finding! You have to go through thousands and thousands of dollars of coin to start accumulating a decent amount of silver. I've not been doing this long enough to give you a good average, but those that have tend to say they average 1 to 2 silver coins per $500 box of halves. AVERAGE being the key word. You may go through 10 skunks in a row and then the next box will have 10 coins in just the one box! Not the way to get rich, but I have fun, and I do it in front of the TV so it's not really any more of a waste of time then if I weren't doing it.

Generally speaking it is starting to seem like the bank boxes are a little more consistant, less skunks, but no huge finds, where as rolls that were deposited at the bank by customers and you are able to buy before they get shipped off to the delivery service will sometimes have huge amounts of silver (think little old lady deciding to turn in her 60 year old coin jar) or non at all (think coin sorter just like you that is turning in his dumps)

This month I have gone through 6 $500 boxes and only found 2 40% coins. I've gone through about $1200 in customer wrapped rolls (CWR) and have found 30 coins! In December it was the other way around I did better with boxes (BWR) then I did CWR.

There is only one way to find out but the fact that there are no half dollars at any of the banks in your area may mean that there are no collectors in your area? If you order coins to be shipped in for you, you may end up with some old coins that have been sitting there collecting dust b/c no one has asked for them. A bank will normally not order coins for you unless you have an account with them and even then some will tell you that they charge a shipping fee, so be upfront with them tell them you are a collector and will be ordering coins on a regular basis. If they have a problem with that shop for a better bank. You can also do dimes if you are not having any luck with halves and do not have $500 for a box order. Anyone will have dimes in inventory.
