In my experience, it's best to be extremely polite and accommodating when asking tellers for rolls of change, especially if you want your bank to order coin for you (if you need boxes of something like halves.) Some branches will differ on their "official" policy of whether they will even sell coin to you (if you're a member or not.) My usual plan is to have a couple supply banks and a few drop banks. If a teller supervisor is kind enough to order me boxes of coins (some will, some won't) I NEVER take the loose change back to that branch. I let the supply banks see the thankful, happy collector side. The drop banks, which hopefully have a coin counter in the lobby (none here in Salt Lake City do yet, unfortunately) I will be even more polite with. I have a bank here where I return up to $2,000 in halves every other week - and I never try to cause a fuss or be a problem customer. I realize that the drop bank has to count the change and send it off (which costs them money and gives them an extra "task") so I'm really nice at those banks. If a bank starts giving me problems when I bring them change (one branch told me they could no longer accept half dollars if I was going to bring in so many) then I will do my best to drop my frequency, switch drop banks often, or not look through so much coin for a bit.

The nicer you are, the more likely you are to get someone to order coin for you, and the more likely a teller is to hold something back for you because it looks strange. Of course, I am more than honest with a teller who asks me why I do what I do, or how much something is worth - especially if it's a supply bank. I feel that, by being courteous and honest, I have nothing to feel uncomfortable with when I walk in to the bank - and it's a pleasant experience when I come in.
