I think the answers to both questions depend on a great many factors, and there's really no hard and fast answer. What coins are you searching? Are you pulling specific dates/mint marks looking for particular errors, or just looking at every coin for "something not right"? Have you studied any resources to know which errors/varieties are most common? Have you identified any particular "die markers" or other giveaways to confirm a particular error/variety. =========== Here's a couple of examples: I've gone through over $15k in halves, and only found one 1974D DDO. My 10x Loupe was able to identify it, but it took a couple of looks to be sure. On the other hand, I've found several 1982-P "No FG" coins very recently, at a rate of about 1 every other box. They're easy to see with the naked eye, and the loupe only serves to confirm that the field is, indeed, blank, with not trace of initials. On the other hand, I've NEVER found any of the "well known" error cents, and to be honest, not sure I ever will. I frequently have a hard time identifying them even in high resolution scans presented for the purpose. I just don't see things on that "copper" background well. *shrug* I know some of the dedicated "error hounds" just get a feel for when a coin's not right, and toss it in a second look box...but others of us can't do that. We need specific targets to look for.
