Anything over 226g might have silver in it (on my scale at least). Over 228g - definitely has silver. Over 229g has a 90%er in there.

The trouble with weighing (I discovered through trial and error) is that the difference between clads and 40% is just too close to call. I've had many rolls with a 40% in them that weighed LESS than some all-clad rolls (but usually, the rolls with 40% weigh slightly more). The average for clad rolls on my scale is around 225.5g. I had the exact number (to a hundredth of a gram) plus standard deviation, yada, yada, yada... thinking that I could just weigh and skip, weigh and skip. But in my 'research' I started discovering those pesky 40% Kennedys that not only fell within a standard deviation, but were actually BELOW the mean. Blew my whole theory. Back to the drawing board...

I was hoping there was a way to use a metal detector, but when I asked on those forums, they said that wouldn't work either. I guess the bottom line is that if it was that easy, someone way smarter than me would have figured it out a long time ago. Shucks...

I am keeping the roll, and it was back in December that I got the roll of halves maybe if it was a day or so after I got the roll but a month is a little silly.

Did a box of halves today - skunk
Did get a silver dime and a war nickel out of some rolls went through

3 boxes and $110 in CWRs. 1 stinking jacked up 68 and a freakily toned 69. I haven't found anything good since the 13th. I'm jealous of all of you.

And Merc? ugh, I can't even look at you. A roll of Walkers? The jealousy is killing me!

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't get to search tonight.

Instead, I'm making $30/hr to sit here and barely work since the crap hit the fan at work today and nobody could do anything for almost 6 hours. Gotta love double OT.

I started a thread specifically for enders while CRHing. I posted a much better pic of the WL half from yesterday using my wife's DROID. If you have pics of your enders post em up so we can all drool. My roll is still intact, sitting in the safe and it looks to be a 1943.

Recently was given a 1909-VDB in fine condition by a friend. He had a case of miscellaneous wheats for me to look through and i filled some holes.:)

Hi all...I need your help. Last night went through a box of halves. Nothing of note, except I found a 1996 P that looked way brighter than all the rest. When I turned it on it's side...all silver through the reeds. At first I thought, I got pure silver, this must be from some special set or something. When held on edge side by side with another clad coin, I could see that it was wider.

What looked like a spot of marker on the back, turned out to be a ship, and I could see some clad (literally less than a 1/16 of an inch). Now I was disappointed, that this coin was silver plated. But all my research has turned nothing up.

Does anyone know of a silver-plated 1996 P Kennedy half? I will submit pictures later. It sure had me fooled. Could it be counterfeit?

I really, really need to start tinkering around with that. Electrically, there's a pretty big difference between 90% silver and CuNi; something like a metal detector, a coil that you pass the roll through, ought to be able to discriminate. I've got a bunch of electronic test gear gathering dust; I really ought to wind a coil, hook it up to a signal generator and a spectrum analyzer, and see if I can see anything.

Sometimes it's not about being smart, but being well-equipped. :)

Finally catching up on reading this thread. Some killer finds recently. Congrats Merc...reminds me of my score from last year.

3 boxes of halves so far this week have been skunks.
My buy bank had a ziploc bag with $52 in halves. Found 1 40% in it.

    Dimes have been decent:
    1/23/2012 Box 1952, 1965 CA
    1/24/2012 Box 1956 x 2, 1964
    1/25/2012 Box 1945

Picking up a partial box of halves ($460-something) tomorrow that's been sitting at one of my banks for awhile. Good luck this weekend!

Just did my first box of halves. All of your finds had me excited that I might find something. Did not. But I am not discouraged. I have a BofA account (sorry to all of you who despise them) and my lead teller is very accommodating. I have promised to take all of the stuff she doesn't like (halves, dollars, etc...) and she will order anything I want and keep anything she finds aside for me. Can't turn down an offer like that. My credit union lets me dump there for free, but they have a $200 a day limit. So I am now going to get a box a week from my bank, buy $200 at a time, and dump and return for me. Keeps us newbs able to search without having to shell out $500 at one time. :)

Did $10 in CWR nickels today and though I didn't find anything amazing I did find a 45-P war and a simple 41-S.

But seeing the 41-S got me to thinking - it's a 71 year old coin - by most measures that pretty old. It's not worth much over face, but this is why I really enjoy searching nickels.

^ Same here. Nickels are really the only coin in circulation where you can commonly find coins from the 50's 40's and 30's.
Other denominations you wont find half as many from because they are either silver, (halves quarters dimes) or they are commonly recognized wheats/IHC.

Two boxes of halves on wed ,both skunk. But I scored a 40% from a tellers tray and got two silver dimes in the reject bin of a coinstar.
