I take an empty roll box with me and use it for a trash can. Then dump the clad back into the roll box. Then it makes it much easier to take it into the next bank and I can dump the trash box in the trash can outside the front door on the way in.

One bank I went to I noticed a teller had a silver half in her tray, tried to buy her halves she sold me all but the one that she said sorry this one is a special one and sets it aside and would not let me buy it. Grr

Complain to a manager. Put those tellers back in place... their job is CUSTOMER SERVICE, not self service.

Seriously, it sounds immature, but complaining to a manager works every time.

Yeah, but do you tend to do 4+ boxes per road trip? Those rolls don't just stay in the box, they have to be crammed, pushed, and otherwise manipulated to stay in the box. PITA. I can usually get about 30 rolls in a box no problem, kind of a hassle thereafter.

Nice find! What kind of shape is it in?

I (respectfully) disagree. In my area tellers are actually subject to getting fired if they take silver, so it is not an issue for me. That being said I think that is really unfair. It does not hurt the bank at all if they collect. Seems to me like that should be a perk of the job, and an obvious fun hobby for any teller. I would feel guilty if I took something from a tellers tray that I knew they wanted for themselves. They deal in currency not collector coins. they are required to give you a dime if you ask them to. but not any one specific dime. Now if a coin shop refuses to sell you something that is a different story.

It does hurt the bank, because the customers (AKA us, and yes, we are customers, even if we don't have an account) walk away with a worse perception of the bank, tellers, managers, etc when we know they cherrypick. I was considering opening an account at a certain unnamed national bank when the head teller let it slip that she cherrypicks any silver coins she finds. Now, I just dump there once in a while, but otherwise, avoid the bank altogether.

A second point, if they find something they want in their tray, they should pull it instantly. If they refuse to pull it, then they deserve to lose it... you don't flaunt it and tell me you're keeping it for yourself, that's just messed up.

As someone who worked in retail, and dealt with hot gifts on occasion (See the Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, I was around for those, particularly the Wii was crazy), and was a manager, I barred my employees from buying them so the customers, our whole reason for even existing as a retail entity, could get them. I could have sold those first three or four shipments of 200+ Wii's in minutes if I had opted to let employees buy them, but I didn't. Even if the mandate hadn't come down from corporate, I probably would have refused to sell them to an employee. You get paid to show up and work. Perks are available, but if those perks are hurting the customer base or customer retention numbers, you're damn straight I'd axe them.

I don't work in retail any longer, but I hold those same principles to any retail-oriented business, and like it or not, banking is increasingly retail-centric. It's just a matter of time before most banks will be open into the evening with hours that strongly resemble a retail establishment. A lot of people forget that banking has really only been deregulated for the past 15 years or so... that particular niche of the retail industry has a lot of room to grow and expand in terms of services offered.

I agree with you on this. Last year I went to a bank (I think it was Chase but I can't remember for sure) in the Bay Area and I went up to a teller who had a tray with several very noticeable silver half dollars. I asked if I could buy them and the teller told me no, that she was going to keep them for herself. I don't mind if a teller keeps them (I would try and do the same) but I thought it was crass that she would keep them in the open for customers to see but wouldn't sell them when asked. Tellers should remove from view what they will not sell to a customer.

I had the day off so I went down south about 30 minutes from my house to hit banks I don't normally go to. There was hardly anything to be had in terms of CWRs or loose change in the trays, but 1 bank had a whole box and another had half a box. From those two boxes I found 3 64s and 5 40%ers. One of the 64s is really nice. I was checking the rolls in my car and it was really sunny today. The sun just bounced right off that sucker. Very pretty. I was hoping for more volume but either it's the time of year or it really is that dry around here. But I'm not complaining! I could've come home empty handed.

I hate the banks that won't give you rolls if you don't have an account. I usually turn right around and open an account then get the rolls anyway. 9 times out of 10 they're never have anything in them so then I leave that account at .01 and make it a dump bank. About every month I get 9 bank statements with accounts that have less than $5 in them :)

In later news.... My very pregnant wife was hungry and had to run to fax some documents. So we went running errands in roll searching style. We piled into the car with a few empty sacks and an razor knife in my pocket. Took off to the farthest end of this decrypted city and hit the first bank. Couldn't talk them out of anything but $100 worth of dimes. We swapped seats and I started cutting and checking rims only discover 1 roosie (1963.) Off to bank #2 and since I didn't have an account they wouldn't give me anything. So, 10 minutes before they close I said I'll be right back. Went out to the car and grabbed the $100 in dimes and the leftover pennies from last night. Walked back in and said I'd like to open an account please :) Deposited the change (the teller was very hateful) and opened an account. After she rudely gave me my sacks back she explained that the funds wouldn't be available till tomorrow. I responded "great will your manager be in tomorrow as well '.....'(her name here.)" She said yes and of course I said great. I will be there first thing tomorrow to dump more on her and speak with her manager about how I regret opening an account if all the employees are going to have this attitude.
Onward we traversed to yet another bank, I was able to get another $100 in dimes but knew they are running low because their change shipment is still delayed from last week ( I already depleted all 5 branches of pennies... oops) Nothing in them while my wife was weaving in and out of traffic but an 1989 1/2 Frank. We faxed the documents and she said she was 'starving.' As I looked at her round belly I saw the baby kick for the first time on the outside. I thought I was in an Aliens movie and the thing was going to shoot out and attack me. So off we went to stuff our faces. On the way home I dumped the last of the dimes with 5 minutes to spare before the bank closed. I normally do not dump at this bank and didn't want to pester for more rolls. I will continue the hunt tomorrow :)
Now that is how you run errands :)

A little bit of fun with an ultrasound picture. For those with a sick demented humor like myself. Hard to believe I am going to be a father huh? Untitled.jpg

Not roll searching, but bought 295 silver dimes and two silver quarters for $500 today, not a bad deal.

Probably gonna resell because I need the cash to buy furniture the girlfriend is making me shell out for.

Mostly circulated Mercs, some nice roosies, haven't looked at 'em real close yet. No keys. Three barbers, slicks.

One of the quarters is a VF 1918, probably worth about 20-30 bucks. :D The only real good keeper in the lot.
