Looks like it went through the garbage disposal...

I've got some pics of mutilated coins I need to post (along with the pics of my Coinalyzer set-up I promised); gotta go to a moot court this afternoon (and dump some coin), so I hope to get them up later today. Too busy...!

Maybe I catch them on slow days...could also be the difference between small towns, and being closer to philly??

 

So far in the coins I picked up today I found 5 %40 ers in $590 CWR and 3 silver dimes in just $50!

 

I hate when tellers tell stories like this, todays story was that a lady brought in $40 in large dollars a few weeks ago and several of them were silver, and of course they didnt have any more of them. Grr if only I checked at that bank a few weeks ago

 

I'll see that story, and raise it. I went to a former favorite bank, which is now the target of far too many half-hunters (and dumpers), and the teller said someone had brought in a dozen or so old, dirty silver dollars -- but that they cleaned right up with a toothbrush and baking soda, and she was going to give them to her grandchildren.

I don't mind the "giving them to her grandchildren" part, but given that they're apparently dealing with some abusive roll-hunters, I wonder if she's making up the "toothbrush" part just to wind people up...!

 

Todays finds:

Searched my 3rd box of 4 since my return from business trip. 1 x 1969 Kennedy (Skunk is broken)
At TD when cashing in I found a 1964 Quarter....that makes $3.00 in quarters without searching for any.
Also - they checked the magnet and found 2 Ikes in there. Grabbed them too.

An interesting thing occured while at TD Bank. I was cashing in $499.80 of dimes. About 1/3 of the way through the dump the bag fills up. A lady who has helped me in the past comes out and starts monkeying around with the pennies and then realized that wasn't the problem. However, she had spent about 5 minutes messing around with the maching and hitting a bunch of buttons. She then asks for help. Another teller comes over and they change the quarters and finally the dimes. Then everything seems o.k.

I go back to cashing the rest in, and the total was for $351 and change. I'm like oh boy....I've read about this...this isn't good.

So, I explain the situation to the one teller who helped and I'm thinking it's about a week at least before I get my other $148.80 as it'll have to go to Brinks and they'll have to count it. It turns out my suspicion was right that when the other lady was banging on the buttons she cleared ALL of the totals from the machine. They had no way of telling what was deposited at all today at that point.

Now - to set some background...this is my main dump bank. I have brought them Donuts and Salt Water Taffy only a few weeks ago. So, they honor my word and give me $499.57 back to me and said they'll take it out of a slush account and reconcile it against their own accounts when Brinks get back to them. I also explained that 4 dimes didn't go through so I kept them. The machine should have counted $499.40. I guess there was $.17 in the machine from the previous person that didn't get counted.

I was very surprised and I sincerely appreciated it. I told them that. I think the teller was a little mad at the other lady for just banging on stuff without getting help.

By the time it was all said and done, I got $.17 over what I cashed in, 2 Ikes, and a free Silver Quarter. All in all not too bad.

Ok, call me stupid, but I need like a photo guide to finding coins in this magic PVC tube at TD...i never see anything special when they change the bags...is it the tube between the bag of halves and dollars, and quarters? do you guys basically stick your hand into the machine??? And where is this magnet???

 

Hey Slamster - the tube is where you described. The main way to find stuff is you have to fill a bag and when they pull the machine out to change it you should be able to grab it as they assume it's from you. Sometimes you can reach in there and move your fingers in the slot, but I can only get so far with my hand. It only seems to happen when they change the bags.

The magnet is in the machine. They rarely check that. The only time they've done that for me is if the machine is at the end of the cycle and you can hear things still clanking in their. They have to take the black plastic piece off the machine, unscrew a nut that holds the thing together, remove another piece and they can clear the magnet. Sometimes, it is truly junk...screws, junk tokens, buttons, etc. Sometimes it's an Ike.

 

Ok, so it is THAT tube that you guys look in....I'm afraid I'll get in trouble for poking around while they change the bags haha....I'll try to be more brave...I guess I know what you mean about the magnet, I got an Ike once, because it was stuck in the machine and they noticed. Thanks for the clarification!

 

That's not the magnet, Ace, that's the sensor. The magnet is on the feeder filter thingy they pull out the top. I always pull it out for them, and take the opportunity to put my hand in where the coins come out of it and grab me some free foreign change. They've never given me an issue with doing that. I've also been there when they pulled out Ikes stuck in the machine before, and they usually let me keep them. One of those ones I found was a '72 T2. For free!

The tube is between the halves and the dollars. Only certain machines reject silver, usually the older gray ones. Some of the newer black ones do as well, I need to start noting which models do and don't.

 

You can usually check and see if anything is caught in the tube by using your fingers to reach up into it while you're checking the reject slot, that's what it feeds into. I'm guessing you just either haven't had luck with finding a machine that rejects silver, or you haven't been there when it's there for the taking. I don't think you search as much as Ace and I, so that would explain that....

 

I don't search as much anymore...and I regret being lazy about getting back into it. But I guess I just haven't seen anything....one time I saw a teller go an clean the machine when no-one was using it...she asked me what I did with all the pennies I would get, so I asked her what she did with all the foreign change she was pulling out of the machine...she said she keeps the foreign for herself...guess that's a perk of working for TD...I'd be the first one to volunteer to clean that thing out

 

I take care of that perk at the branches I cash in at. I've probably pocketed somewhere in the realm of $50 in foreign. I should count it...

 

So I have a weird story for today. I was picking up some groceries at my local kroger and this man walks up to me and says "Just so you know I have some half dollars." and so I'm say " That's cool. How much are looking to sell them for?" and he says that he has $70 in face value. At this point in time I finally realized that he's a bank teller at BoA. And he continued on telling me that he will be back at work in ten minutes and so on. When I get there I only had $45 because my normal coin counter was down so I couldn't cash my nickels. I go to BoA and ask for the halves. As he's making stacking the coins, he stops and pulls out two halves that were clearly silver. Oh well, at least he told me about them.

 

The whole foreign coin thing with TD Banks is odd. One teller told me once that they throw them out. Once I was told I can't have them because they send them back.

 

Merc - you are probably right. I just know they have to crack the entire top piece off and they unscrew some stuff when I've had some luck in them pulling stuff out. Either way, when that rattling occurs and you've dumped all your coin there is a good chance something that can't be fed through is stuck!

Well at least you know who not to call on now.. Maybe he'll forget the 65-70's..
