look at the margins then and look at them now and you'll find your answer... I'm not saying banks don't make money, but 40 years ago even medium sized cities had one, maybe a couple banks. Now, there are seven different banks just down at the strip mall.

Sorry, too late. Hudson county was done about a year ago. I gave up after finding a full unopened box of marked coins.

I see all of your points. However why would they have a coin machine that is self service if they did not expect to change it out?? Everyone here is more than happy to give boxes yet frown when you bring one back (no matter the denomination). I've had several auto loans etc from my dump so it's not like I'm some guy with a $100 savings account. All the banks I've visited don't even carry the wrapper for halves. I had to order my own online, yet 99% of the banks only take rolls.

How do you think the copper hoarders with Ryedales do it?

Don't complain...TD Bank's coin counters only hold $100 in the halves bag.

You are doing 14 boxes a week and wonder why is dry in your area??

No I do four boxes a week. I've got ten coming in from a friend out of state.

Did you think collectors ruined it for collectors? The greed behind many of the antics I've read about on this forum would cause me to stop ordering boxes for "collectors" just to keep my employee's happy.

Also, exactly how much interest do you think a bank makes off your $300 bucks pal? Seriously?

Don't confuse the bank and it's fee's, profits, interest with the employee's having to deal with the ordering, handling, and dumping of $7,000-$12,000-$20,000 of halves. I'm in sales, but if I were a bank manager I'd tell you to go pound sand.

I will have to say you boggled my mind talking about 10-14 yr. olds...........who ruined it for them? When was the last time a 10-14 yr old ordered HUNDREDS of dollars of any kind of change?

Worth noting the fees for ordering rolled change is something like 15 cents on every $100 for most major banks.

Most of those banks state the coin machines are NOT for commercial use and for personal use only. Do you really think they meant that for $7,000 in halves just because you don't own a business?

This is taking advantage of a bank actually TRYING to make it easier and convenient for it's customers to turn in change without having to roll it. When the choice few take advantage of privileges, they usually get taken away and ruined for the masses. GREED will ultimately destroy roll searching!!

I would also argue that banks are more than happy to give boxes.....IF that is the case......it's coming to an end soon.

I work for a Bank in America :: wink wink :: and have talked with cash planning (the ones who actually fulfill the orders for the branches) and you all would be amazed at the specifics behind the ordering - where do the coins come from, where to they go and the COST involved - so no, your 300 dollar account means jack crack to a bank - even if you had 2 or 3k in there, congrats your still a small fry and not covering a fraction of the cost to ship your multiple boxes. I am not going to rant and rave and tell members how the lack of logic (5-7+ boxes a week?) has been killing their searches and others. The tellers AND the cash fulfillment individuals know who is ordering what and from what locations - I do not find it hard to believe at all that some who are searching higher levels of boxes are simply getting boxes that they have already searched (12-15 skunk boxes in a row for example). It is very easy to see trends - lets say my location St. Louis for example - if it is cheaper to ship a quarter box from 4 Branches in the area to meet your request vs coming from the fed, that is your "created" box then. The banks (At least the one I work for) will do whatever they can to keep costs low and if shipping from 20 miles is cheaper than 1500 miles - thats your coin. From what I have been told - if you have accounts with multiple banks you decide which bank you want to order from and what bank you want to drop them off at. I order from BofA and drop at a local credit union that way, at least in the short run, I wont be seeing the same coins 10 different times.

Best of luck to all the fellow roll searchers!

Im just curious - how do you lug $7000 dollars in halves to the bank? I bring in about $200 in pennies in detergent buckets to my bank every week they dont mind me doing what I do.

I pull from boa as well and dump at a credit union. All the boa boxes have the yellow wrappers which as I understand comes from the fed. The credit union dumps to brinks.

Went to a bank last weekend and they were gonna charge me $2 for buying 20 rolls of coin, what a rip off. I wont be going there again.

I searched through a box of nickels and found:

*An almost unrecognizable War Nickel. I had to angle the coin to see a very faint "1945" on the obverse, but I could clearly see the P on the reverse.
*34 early Jeffersons (Including my first '38 Jefferson from circulation; I found two, a '38 and a '38-D).

    Also, from a teller's drawer, I scored a '63 Franklin.

Wow, nice find on the '38-D, haven't found one of those yet.

An Incredible Haul At My Credit Union Today

Last Friday I was making a withdrawal at the local credit union and did my usual spiel of "do you have any half dollars, Ike Dollars or $2 bills. The teller replied that she did have some halves, and I asked her if she had any that were dated before 1970. Her response was "Yeah, but I don't think you will want it because it is old and dirty" I took it anyway and got a 1964 90%er. She said she had $340 worth of halves in the vault if I wanted them. I told her I would think about it, because quite bluntly I have never had luck with half dollar roll searches. On a lark this morning while driving by the credit union I decided to give it a shot...

I am very damned glad I did. The first roll produced two 1963 Frankies, then nearly entire rolls of 40% halves - getting near the end of the 34 rolls I found the Walkers. A grand total of 44 40% halves, and 9 90%ers including a 1942, a 1943, a 1944, four 1963 Frankies, and two 1964's. Then one of the rolls had particularly shiny halves, there were ten proofs from 1981 and 1982.

I think I might convert over from cent box searching now!
